Simple Holiday Party Appetizer: Hanky Panky's

Stephanie Bannister
I know, the name sounds weird, but hear me out! I actually do not know where the name came from, but I have heard of a slightly different version that had "poop" in the name, not very appetizing! I'll stick with the name my family and I use. It is a tradition to have these on holidays in my family. It was given to my grandmother in the early "80s. She tried them at a party, and just had to get the recipe from the hostess. This recipe is a bit spicy, but you can change it to fit the needs of your crowd. The first time I brought this dish to my former in-laws family get-together, I was mortified. My mother-in-law was the first to try one, and gasped and spit the contents of her mouth into a napkin! She exclaimed, "Wow! that was really hot!" Then the rest of the family wanted nothing to do with it for the rest of the day; hence why the change may be needed. I finally got my brother-in-law to try a bite, and he was hooked. He ate almost the whole platter. Here are the ingredients you will need:

1 1-pound package of Ground Round

1 1-pound package of Zesty breakfast sausage (for less spicy, use original flavor)

1 1-pound package of Velveeta cheese, cubed

1 1-pound package of Cocktail Rye bread

1 t. Garlic powder

1 t. Oregano

1 T. Worcester sauce

Preheat the oven to 450 ̊ F. Mix Ground Round and breakfast sausage together in frying pan. Brown meat, chopping to small pieces as it cooks. Drain well. Return meat to pan, and add cubed pieces of Velveeta cheese, Garlic powder, Oregano, and Worcester sauce to the meat mixture. Once the Velveeta cheese has melted, remove pan from heat. Spread meat and cheese mixture on Cocktail Rye breads, and place them on a cookie sheet. Bake in 450 ̊ oven until the mixture begins to bubble, approximately 8 - 10 minutes. This will make enough to fill the sheet approximately 3 times. They go fast, so bake them one after another, or you will hear a lot of whining! Enjoy!
