Simple Ideas for Fall Home Makeovers

As summer draws to a close, you may be thinking that it's time to redecorate your home in order to reflect a more "fall" feeling. Making the decorating transition from summer to fall is easier than you might think. Here are some easy ideas for changing the look and feel of your home for fall.

First, think about how fall makes you feel. What does fall look and smell like? What does it remind you of? These are feelings and sensations that you will be trying to capture when you make over your home. The season is generally cooler, so you will want to create a sense of cozy and comfort. This can best be achieved through colors, scents, and accessories.

Fall colors are mainly earth tones - browns, deep reds and oranges, dark purples - colors that are considered "warm". Not only do these colors reflect the seasonal change of autumn, but they also make a room feel smaller. The smaller a room feels, the more cozy it becomes.

Fabric is a great way to integrate fall colors into your home decorating scheme. Instead of going out and buying new furniture, simply purchase or make your own slipcovers for larger furniture pieces. Choose colors that coordinate well with each other, yet still utilize the darker fall colors. Since furniture is usually the main focal point of any room, changing the colors of these pieces will change the overall look of a room dramatically without huge amounts of work on your part.

Since changing the flooring in even one room can be extremely expensive, consider the use of full rugs or runners for an inexpensive but striking floor makeover. Remember to coordinate the color of the rugs with the color of your furniture. Using rugs with longer shag will add to the coziness of the room.

Accessorizing your home in the fall months is easy because you have so many different options, and pretty much everything you can choose from will fit in well with your holiday decorating. Again, think of fall. Leaves, fall flowers and foliage, dried potpourri, and fall fruits and vegetables are all great accessory choices to spruce up a room. Wall hangings are another option that will keep your walls interesting while being easy to interchange with the changing seasons.

Many people do more cooking and baking in the fall once it becomes a little too brisk to be outside as much, and those scents are a big part of the fall feeling. If you aren't comfortable in the kitchen or simply don't have the time to bake regularly, don't worry. You can still achieve that crucial element of your home makeover through the use of artificial means. Candles are a great way to achieve fall scents without all the work and they come in so many different scents now. It's all about those fall scents of cookies and pies, pine, cinnamon, orange, and holly. Fall scents can also be found in essential oils, incense, and potpourri.

Hopefully these tips will help you get started with your fall home makeover. Remember to draw from your own perceptions of fall to create a feeling in your home that is truly your own.
