Simple Karaoke Songs for Beginners

Singing your first karaoke song at a bar is almost a rite of passage in the American college system. Unfortunately some of us are vocally challenged and dread having to sing (off key) to a crowd full of people. Some of us are just too sloshed to even stand up straight. We are lucky to even sing a passable version of "Happy Birthday". Sometimes getting on the mic is unavoidable, usually by a chanting table full of your friends. In these cases you might want a few simples song to please the crowd, unless you could care less about your singing as long as you do not remember anything the next morning. Here are some easy karaoke songs for first timers to belt out.

"Going The Distance" - Cake. This song does not require all that much musical talent to pull off decently. You can probably just "speak" the words and the crowd wont notice your pathetic attempt at entertainment. While not really a crowd pleaser, this song is a good backup in case you really can not find anything else to sing. The lead singer of Cake dresses like a trucker so bonus points are easy to earn if you dress in a flannel shirt and trucker hat.

Pretty much any Sublime song. Sublime songs are not all that hard to sing in the first place (although Bradley Nowell did have a great voice), but younger crowds will always shout along no matter how times they hear the song. Have the MC put on a Sublime song and chances are you wont even be able to hear yourself over the crowd chanting along. You can even point the mic at the crowd for a few spells and look smooth (while you take a breather). On the down side, Sublime is one of the most overplayed bands in karaoke so expect to hear the same song multiple times during the night.

Rehab released "Sittin At A Bar" only a few years ago but is already almost the perfect sing a long song after a night of drinking. Grab a few friends to disperse the attention and chant along with the crowd. No demographic except for goths (who generally do not go to bars) can resist this song and is now almost a mating call for college kids.

These songs are really easy for those beginning in karaoke to get comfortable on mic and in front of a crowd of people. Eventually you realize that nobody remembers how or what you sang after five minutes and you look like a fun and social person in the process.
