Simple Last-Minute Halloween Costumes

Carol Bengle Gilbert
You've procrastinated planning a Halloween costume or gotten invited to a Halloween party at the last minute. The racks of Halloween costumes in the stores are depleted. There's nothing in your size and not even a decent assortment of accessories. What are you going to do with just hours to plan a Halloween costume and nothing to work with?

Be resourceful. Look around and see what supplies you have on hand or can easily obtain that can be quickly fashioned into a last-minute Halloween costume.

Simple Last-Minute Halloween Costumes Fashioned from a Cardboard Box

Is there a cardboard box large enough to fit around you in your attic or basement? A box and some construction paper, and some elastic or shoelaces and staples to strap it on, can be the foundation for a wide variety of simple, last-minute Halloween costumes. What kind of last-minute Halloween costume can you make from a cardboard box?

With a cardboard box, you can become a die (or with a friend, a pair of dice), a robot, or a television set. You can even turn yourself into a human recycling bin by adding a few boxes pulled from your own recycling bin.

Simple Last-Minute Halloween Costume Fashioned from Gauze

An easy Halloween costume to make at the last minute is the mummy. Stop by the drugstore and buy a few rolls of gauze on the way home and convince a friend to help wrap you up.

Simple Last-Minute Halloween Costumes Fashioned from Aluminum Foil

With several rolls of heavy duty aluminum foil, you can save Halloween by fashioning a tin man from the Wizard of Oz costume.

Want a simple last-minute Halloween costume from aluminum foil that's easier and requires less foil? Make a foil hat of the variety that might be worn by a paranoid conspiracy theorist, wear rumpled clothing and ruffled hair, along with a bit of makeup to create a disorderly appearance.

Simple Last-Minute Halloween Costumes Fashioned from Duct Tape

Duct tape comes in a variety of colors and is stiff enough to make some amazing Halloween costumes. I once saw an incredible knight costume made from duct tape. But remembering that we are talking about the last minute here, what Halloween costumes can you make with duct tape without spending the whole night creating the costume?

DuctTapeGuys.com suggests placing duct tape around your head sticky side facing outward and rolling in grass clippings to make a Chia Pet Halloween costume.

A variation would be to use cotton balls in lieu of grass clippings to represent soap bubbles, wear minimal clothing, and pin an oversize bath towel around yourself.

When you're left to craft a Halloween costume at the last minute, keeping it simple will keep you sane.

Another thing you can do with a cardboard box is a Rubik's cube. A friend of mine did this with electric tape, colored poster board, and a box. It only took him 30 minutes to put it together!

Giving this a read after seeing your post in the high pv forum thread. I know it's the day after Halloween, but this was great - so many easy to make ideas. I see why it got so many views.
