Simple Maintenance for Fiberglass Pools

Fiberglass pools require care but they are designed to minimize the amount of work involved. The cost of installing a fiberglass pool is usually higher than other kinds of pools but this cost can be recovered in the time saved in maintaining the fiberglass pool.

The surface of the fiberglass is nonporous so dirt will not stick to the sides and bottom as easily. Moss or algae that sometimes builds up can be simply brushed away. Hard or extensive scrubbing should not need to be done and should be avoided to reduce scratching. Fiberglass pools usually do not need to be acid washed or resurfaced the way that concrete pools do. If the pool has been drained a mild vinyl tile cleaner can be used.

Fiberglass pools can develop a hard water calcium build up that can make the pool look dirty. This build up is not harmful to occupants of the pool but should be cleaned. Drain the pool and use an application of white vinegar or a paste made from white vinegar and baking soda to remove the calcium build up. Be sure to rinse the paste solution or vinegar thoroughly but try avoid heavy scrubbing. Commercial calcium removers are available at building and pool supply stores.

You should not have to worry as much about cracks or breaks in a fiberglass pool. They are more resilient to tree roots and ground movement. Fiberglass repair kits are available in the event that your pool does need repair. Kits are available for the pool owner to make the repair themselves or the work can be done professionally. Be sure to purchase a fiberglass pool repair kit and not an auto type repair kit as the pool repair material is design to stand up to the chlorine levels in the water. You should also maintain the correct level of water in the pool to prevent changes in the ground pressure that could cause your pool to buckle.

Regular use of a pool vacuum or skimmer and an occasional soft surface brushing should keep your pool in good shape. Any oils that build up above the water level can be removed by gently wiping the surface with a soft cloth. Avoid the use of metal type pool vacuums as they can scratch the fiberglass surface. Filters and pumps on fiberglass pools should last longer than systems on other pool types. There should be less build up of dirt and the filtering system has less work to do. Always check your filter and pump at recommended intervals to prevent damage and keep your pool in good condition for your enjoyment.
