Gershwin's aria describes the season perfectly. It is summertime, and your makeup should be easy too. The quest: makeup that withstands summer's heat and humidity yet allows your natural beauty to shine through. The goal: an effortless, breezy summertime glow that transforms into a glamorous party look with a few simple makeup touch-ups.
How do you go from a day at the beach to a night at the party without fuss? Learn from our makeup hits and misses. Here are no fuss makeup tips that work for me and my friends here on the coast of Charleston, South Carolina.
Keep it simple for a day at the beach
Before you hit the beach, slather tinted moisturizer with a high SPF all over your face and neck. Tinted moisturizers with SPF work well to protect your face from the harsh rays of the sun while smoothing out your skin tone and providing your face with a nice, even glow. Tinted moisturizers with SPF can cost from $10 to $50. Some drugstore brands work effectively and look good in natural sunlight. If you are brand loyal to a specific cosmetic company, see if they offer a tinted moisturizer with SPF. For use at the beach, look for words like sweat proof, water proof, water resistant, perspiration resistant, etc. on the packaging. At the beach, the sun's harmful UV rays reflect off the sand and the water, magnifying your exposure. Do not compromise on the SPF; I cannot overstate the importance of protecting yourself from the sun.
Add a natural flush of color to your cheeks (and eyes if you wish - I leave my lids natural) with stains and tints. When applying any color for a day at the beach remember, less is best. Powder or heavy cream cosmetics tend to slide around on your face at the beach, and they look unnatural in the sunlight. Stains and tints are light and translucent. They blend into your skin and allow your natural beauty to show through.
If desired, apply one coat of brown or brownish-black waterproof mascara to frame your eyes. Black can look too stark in natural sunlight.
Use a tinted lip balm with SPF and keep your lips covered. Reapply often.
Transform into a glamorous party look with these quick makeup tips
If you have time, wash your face and moisturize generously. A splash of cool water will perk you up and give you a clean, fresh canvas. Going straight from the beach to the party? No sweat. (ha!) Use blotting tissues to absorb excess oil and perspiration. Then apply mineral powder foundation all over your face. Mineral powder foundation hides blemishes, evens out skin tone and provides light, natural coverage. As a bonus, it's quick and easy to apply.
For a polished look, select an under eye concealer that is one to one-and-a-half times lighter than your natural skin tone. With your baby or ring finger, gently tap it only on the darkest under eye areas. Blend well.
Bronzers are a must for summer party look. I use powder bronzer with a touch of shimmer. Take a fluffy brush and apply a light dusting of bronzer to the tops of your cheek bones, nose, forehead and chin - directing the powder to where the sun would hit your face naturally.
Smile and dust a peach or light coral blush on the apples of your cheeks. Blend the powder toward your hairline.
Skip the heavy eyeliners and sweep taupe, bronze, light brown or yellow-gold eye shadow all over your lids, up to the brow bone. Touch the centers of your eye lids and under your eyebrows with a shimmery highlighter.
Liberally apply black mascara.
Finish your glamorous party-time look with shiny, moisturizing, long-wearing lip color. Sheer pink, peach or bronze shades look nice in the summer. For a more formal summertime party, make a dramatic statement with a deeper plum or berry lip color.
In the summer, pare down your makeup routine. Keep it simple. Experiment and see what works with your skin type and lifestyle. Establish a routine that can take you from a day at the beach to a night at the party in 15-minutes or less.
At the beach and at the party, the most important thing to wear is a smile. Have fun. A happy face is a pretty face.
