Simple Responsibilities for Children

We can't do everything for our babies for the rest of their lives. They have to start their independence by performing simple tasks for themselves. One simple thing for your child to learn is how to properly dry off after a bath. It doesn't require anything but a towel.

First you should praise your child for trying to attempt such a 'big kid' responsibility. Encouraging them will make them want to complete the task. However, reassure your child that practice makes perfect. You cannot expect him/her to learn this task overnight.

Let your child have the towel. Have your child wipe his face first and move on to the hair. It is important to do the hair first so that it does not drip down over an area that your child has already dried. Show him how to use the towel on his hair. Stand by and give instructions, but let him do the job on his own.

Next, show your child how to dry the top portion of the body. Start with the shoulders, encouraging her to get the back of the arms that she cannot see. This is a good time to stress the importance of underarm hygiene. Move to the chest area and down the belly.

You may need to demonstrate the proper technique for drying your child's back. Most kids find this portion very fun. Have them place the towel behind them while holding on to both ends. Make it a booty shaking contest! Encourage them to run the towel back and forth to make sure all areas are dry.

Next, have your child dry each leg. It is usually a little easier if the child has something to slightly prop their leg on. Start at the thigh and go all the way to the foot. Again, make sure they are reaching the back of the leg that is hidden. Even though you can't see it, it still needs to be dried.

Now you should have your child dry their private areas. You will have to show them the proper way of handling the delicate places. Be sure to instruct them on the proper technique for front and back.

Have your child dress themselves. If the clothing will not slide on easily, explain to them why. Teach them the importance of towel drying completely.

Responsibilities should be given out early. You should encourage your child to do things on his own. This will not only help them learn tasks, it will also give them self-esteem. Drying off after a bath is the perfect responsibility to start your little one off with.
