Simple Sausage Gravy

Erin Duff
I was fortunate to have a grandmother who made delicious homemade food, and I often tried to copy her recipes. She didn't use set recipes, she just "knew" how much of each ingredient she needed. I attempted to make sausage gravy like she did, and could never quite figure it out without proper measurements. Luckily, though guidance from my sister and a few more attempts on my own, I've been able to learn how to make sausage gravy according to measurements, and wanted to share the recipe.

Items you'll need:

16 oz. Sausage
½ c. sausage drippings
½ c. flour
3 ½ c.-4 c. milk (2% works best)
1 tsp. pepper
1 tsp. salt

1. Heat and fully cook sausage in a frying pan. When browned, drain the sausage and then add the drippings to a separate frying pan large enough to hold the gravy.
2. Add flour to the sausage drippings. Add slowly, and stir over low heat 5-10 minutes, or until the gravy begins to golden.
3. Stir milk in, 1 c. at a time. Stir frequently, and add sausage, salt, and pepper. Let the gravy boil slightly, and it will thicken as you continue to stir. Let the gravy thicken to the desired consistency, and then serve over biscuits or toast.

Tip: If you would like to add some kick to the gravy, use hot sausage. It makes it spicy and adds heat to your recipe.

This recipe will serve 4-6 people.

Yep that's how I make although we (18 year old son & I) usually add a few red peppers for spicy kick to it :) LOL now I'm super hungry for some :)
