Gift cards: There are gift cards available for many different establishments. If you know of someone who needs some extra groceries for example, you can give them a Wal-mart gift card. This would also be a good idea for someone who needed baby supplies such as diapers or formula. You could also give someone a gift card to a spa, which would help their mind and body.
Babysitting: Sometimes a couple just needs some time alone to put things in perspective, and help them figure out what to do. You can offer to babysit for a night and let them go out to talk things over. It will help them by giving them a relaxing evening that is sure to reduce their stress level.
Donations: You can take up money at work for others. If you know someone who is really in dire straights financially, you can explain the situation to co-workers and ask if they would like to help. Suggest that each person give just five dollars. That won't put a hardship on the giver, and it can make big difference in someone's life.
Taxi service: Sometimes all a person needs is a way to get somewhere. They may need to go to the doctors' office, the grocery store, or to work. Offer to give them a lift until they can manage on their own again.
Store pickup: This one is especially helpful for the elderly. If you know someone who just can't get around good anymore, or isn't healthy enough for shopping trips, offer to pick their groceries or medication up for them.
Room and board: Offer to let a family member or close friend stay with you for a while so they can save up money. Whatever little they pay you will definitely be less than they'd have to pay for rent somewhere. This can help someone out tremendously, and make it possible for them to move forward with their life when the time comes.
Listening: Sometimes all a person needs is for someone to be there for them. They need a shoulder to cry on, a sympathetic ear, and advice. Doing this will cost you nothing but time, but could be just what the other person needs to reach a very important decision.
As you can see, there are many ways to help people, and some of them don't cost you anything. However you decide to help will make a profound difference in the recipients' life, and will leave a warm feeling in your heart. Give of yourself and you will receive much in return.
