Simple Steps for Beautiful Nails

Our poor nails go through so much - being bitten, broken, chipped and the plethora of other dangers they endure from our everyday lives. But we don't always have the time or money that it takes to go to a salon. So here are a few tips for healthy, beautiful nails.

Let's start on the inside. Your nails need vitamins and nutrients just like the rest of your body. So make sure you're getting enough vitamin c and iron, which are both fundamental to your nails' health. Foods like eggs, raisins, nuts, lean meats, and green leafy veggies are all rich in iron so they're great for your nails.

Now on to the basic nail care. Firstly, throw out those nail strengthening polishes. The strengthening agent in the polish makes nails more brittle and susceptible to breakage. It also decreases your nail-plate flexibility. Meaning if your nails bend, they are more likely to break.

Next, make sure you trim and file your nails regularly. This helps to decrease chipping or breakage. Use your clippers to cut straight across, and then use your file to smooth and round the edges. After you finish filing, gently rub moisturizer into your nails and around the tips. You can heal and prevent hangnails by applying moisturizer to your nails and cuticles nightly.

Lastly, we're on to polish which is, of course, completely optional. Start by making sure your nails are completely clean by thoroughly washing and drying your hands and nails. You can prepare your nails by applying a thin layer of petroleum jelly around your cuticles. This way if you happen to get nail polish on your skin it is easily removed.

If you are using a lighter color, start by applying a clear base coat. If the color is darker, use a lighter creamy color for a base coat. This prevents the dark color from leaving any discoloration on your nails. Apply the polish in one wide swipe onto your nails. Don't apply too thick of a coat. Thick coats can create bubbles and peel. Also, apply polish onto the edge and a bit under your nail. This creates a wrap effect which helps to prevent chipping. If you need a second coat of color, make sure you let the first completely dry. Finally, apply a clear top coat to seal it all. To help your color last longer, apply the clear coat daily.

Good tips! I totally agree about putting the polish on in thin layers.
