Step 1
Stretch before running. Stretching can help you avoid injury. Take your time when stretching to get your mind in work-out mode.
Step 2
Get on the treadmill and start out slow. Warm up for a few minutes and gradually increase speed each time you get on the treadmill. Becoming a faster runner is a process. Gradually increase speed each day and work yourself up to a faster level, otherwise you risk overworking your muscles and, as a result, serious injury.
Gradually increase the length of time you spend on treadmill. Start out on level one and move the treadmill up every few minutes until you reach a comfortable level. Stay at that level for a few more minutes until you are actually running. Increase the length of time you run each day and increase speed gradually. Listen to your body. If you are doing too much, slow down and give your body more time to work up to a higher pace.
Step 3
Sprint in a field. A short sprint is running 60 to 100 meters. You can also work your way up to becoming a faster runner by doing long sprints as fast as you can in a field or track. This is also called interval training. Only do short sprints to avoid overworking your heart.
Step 4
Sleep for eight or nine hours each night. Sleep is vital for building strength and endurance. When your body is well rested you are better able to take on the day.
Tips
Find a work-out buddy. Going to the gym with a friend can make the experience more enjoyable. You can also encourage and challenge each other. Go to the park and run with your friend as well.
Runners World says to vary your work-outs, so remember to mix things up a bit and run on the treadmill as well as doing interval training by sprinting.
Always talk to your doctor before starting a new exercise program.
