Simple Steps to Claim the Personal Responsibility for Your Life

Albert Adler
We need to make a decision if we want to take full responsibility for our life or not. If we do then we need to stop blaming others in our failures and misery. If you want to take that responsibility then there are certain limiting beliefs that can prevent you from achieving your goals. Of course there can be much more limiting beliefs since there is infinite variations of them. The most important thing is to start working on those beliefs that are on the surface. It is important to become aware of your thoughts. Now we need to go inside ourselves and try to find those limiting beliefs related to taking the responsibility for our life in our own hands.

During that process relax and let whatever thoughts to flow in your mind. Let them come to the surface of consciousness. The most important thing is to not criticize them. You can use examples I'm giving below. But it will be more useful if you can formulate them on your own words.

Find your limiting thought and write it down. It is very important to write it down. By doing this we are bringing the problem to the surface. Now we can look at it face to face and start working on it. It's like bringing the light into dark room. Our fears will disappear under the light of consciousness.

So these are examples of limiting beliefs:

1.

I cannot change anything in my life.

2.

I am a victim of the forces I can't control

3.

I feel lost in complicated situations and feel helpless.

4.

My failure is a fault of may wife/parents/boss/government

Once you have identified the limiting belief it is time to change the old pattern of thinking and create a new one. This is the process of changing our attitude towards given subject, changing our opinion about ourselves and outer world. It can be more generalized approach to that subject, or an attempt to look at it under different angle, or creating completely new thought about it.

A very good way of working with these beliefs is to write them down on paper with pencil and erase them letter by letter with an eraser. After the whole sentence is erased fill in the blank with a new supporting belief. This process requires creative approach. Find a way that suits you best. In that case the process will be more efficient.

Below are the examples of new supporting beliefs. As well as with the limiting ones I recommend you to come up with your own. That will make the process even more efficient. Since your own words will work best only for you. If you can't come up with your own formulation immediately take your time. Eventually they will come to your mind. If several thoughts come to you pick the one that you fill is the most powerful. It should be something that you like and something that stimulates a new feeling in you.

These are the examples:

1. I had successes in the past that changed my life. My failures only teach me the lessons I need to learn. I am responsible for my future.

2. I learn to act. I take the responsibility for my actions in my own hands.

3. Complicated situations are simply the lessons that I have attracted into my life. My efforts and time help me to resolve them.

Here is another very powerful exercise to get rid of a limiting belief. Take two sheets of paper. Write down all your failures on one of them. Write down all your successes on another one. Now compare those two lists. This exercise works even better if someone who knows you very well will help you to do it.

If you are serious about changing your limiting beliefs this exercise can work miracles for you.
