Simple Steps to a Happy Marriage

How to Keep Your Marriage Happy and Healthy

Happy marriages are usually not completely effortless. To make and keep a happy marriage, it takes some effort between two people who are in love.

Communication is a key factor in having a happy marriage. When the talking stops, the trouble starts. If there is an issue that needs to be addressed, by all means bring it up. Talk to each other calmly and with respect so that no one turns off because he/she is being attacked. We have a tendency to want things our own way. But sometimes the only way to work things out in a marriage is by compromise. Taking steps to rectify your spouse's concerns goes a long way toward saying "I love you".

Being romantic is important to a happy marriage. In the beginning of a relationship, romance is always in the air. But over the course of a life-long commitment to each other, things change. Kids come along. You grow accustomed to each other's ways. Jobs take their toll. And couples just grow comfortable with each other. Making an effort to maintain the romance will pay you back tenfold. Maybe have a date night occasionally; some time for just the two of you. Leave a little love note. Buy a little gift for no reason whatsoever except to show the other person how much you care.

Learn to accept your partner's flaws. No one is perfect. We are all just different. Even though we may think our way or look or idea is better, giving a little goes a long way. And whatever you do, don't criticize. Criticism and sarcasm are very hurtful to the person receiving it. It sticks in the memory banks for quite a while.

Lastly, forgiveness is a required step to a happy marriage. Every single person makes mistakes. Sometimes, no matter how strong a marriage is and how much love there is, someone is going to make a mistake. It could be a bad judgment error. It could be a result of speaking without thinking. It could be just a difference of opinion that leads to resentment. Forgiving your partner is a way of building respect, trust and friendship.

Marriages can remain strong with a little bit of effort and some common sense. In the end, you are rewarded with a best friend/partner for life!
