Simple Steps to Healthy Eyes

Take Good Care of Your Eyes

S. A. Knight
If you ask most people if they fear losing all of their teeth more than they fear losing even one eye, the answer will be obvious. Take my teeth please!

In my ophthalmology practice, it is very common to see people who are in danger of losing their eyesight from disease or infection and they are not taking the routine simple steps to protect themselves.

Fortunately, in spite of the lack of vigilance, most people don't lose their eyesight even when they have serious problems and symptoms that they ignore.

Basic common sense is the first rule. If you get something in your eye or your vision is suddenly very blurry and the problem persists then something is wrong and you should seek guidance. Often I use the example of getting a rock in your shoe. You know something is wrong and you had better stop and check your shoe or you know you are likely to have a sore or blister develop. Many people don't apply the same common sense to their eyes. Of course if you have some disease like Diabetes or Hypertension then ignoring changes in your vision can lead to serious complications and even blindness.

Routine eye exams are important at any age but especially as we get older.

The routine exam visits to all my dentist friends for checkups or teeth cleaning are far more regular than people getting their eyes examined.

The first rule is common sense and the second rule is routine exams at least every two years and more frequently if you have other systemic medical conditions that can lead to vision complications and blindness.
