First, stop eating out, or at least drastically reduce it. In addition to cutting down your budget, it will help you trim your waistline. Whether you are dining in nice restaurants or eating from a drive-thru, the food is designed to be tasty and keep you coming back for more. So they don't skimp with the butter, they go for the meat that has a little extra fat because it's cheaper and tastier, and they put a little more salt than you would at home. If you normally eat out for lunch every day during the week and a couple of evenings, start bringing your lunch. It doesn't even need to be a salad or something healthy- just prepare it at home. You'll be more mindful of what you put into it, and you will likely shed a few pounds.
Second, cut out the drinks. Whether it's alcohol (which piles on the weight) or soda, these are packing on so many extra pounds, and you aren't even getting any nutritional value from it. If you absolutely must, then switch to drinking diet soda, or flavoring the water with a drink mix packet. But there's something to be said for learning to actually enjoy water, tea, and black coffee. Along these same lines, watch out for milk, juice, and other things that might not be awful for you. They still have calories, and though you can still enjoy them, try to cut back to just water.
Third, get some form of exercise each day. A lot of experts will tell you that you need to do 30 minutes of exercise that is strenuous enough to make you sweat each day, but I personally believe that if you were completely sedentary, any form of movement is better than you were previously doing. Take the stairs once a day, or park a little farther than you normally would. Guilting yourself over not doing enough will only make you regretful when you can't do that much, and you'll be more likely to give up on it.
Fourth, give yourself a break. Sometimes you need to eat out. Sometimes you want to lay on the couch and do nothing. Look at the bigger goal. Eat out less than you used to, exercise more than you used to, and you will lose a few pounds. There's no reason to be upset with yourself for not keeping a perfect regimen. Just try to do better the next day.
