Simple Steps on How to Get Rid of Garden Weeds

Mary Drew
There are a ton of do it yourself ways that you can find and use to help diminish weeds in your garden. The weeds in your garden usually grow quickly and are invasive. Weeds will compete with the plants in your garden for their food and their water and many weeds can grow in a vast array of soils. A lot of times you will free your garden by pulling the weeds out, only to have them reseed themselves and germinate. Try some of these simple suggestions below to help get rid of and reduce the weeds in your garden.

Lay down a plastic bag, a garbage bag will work fine. Doing this before you start your garden is the best preventative action you can take. If you have already established your garden and did not do this step it's fine. You can still lay down the plastic around your existing plants; just make sure you leave enough soil exposed to get water. You can then cover the entire plastic area with mulch. This will help double your efforts in preventing weeds from sprouting, seeding again and germinating.

Using mulch, you can apply mulch in your garden beds to help prevent weeds from seeding again. By covering the soil around your garden it helps stop weeds from sprouting and stops them from germinating. There are many different types of mulch that you can use like bark chips which are good at suffocating small weaker weeds. Wood chips are the most common that people seem to use and are especially good at stifling weed growth. Even your grass clippings can be used as mulch. They have high nitrogen content and are great at oppressing weed development. Straw is another common type of mulch that not only is very good at helping avert weed growth but also will help the soil to retain its moisture.

Spray vinegar, some suggest vinegar as a technique for reducing weeds and keeping your pets safe. Using vinegar will remove a variety of different types of weeds. To uses vinegar to get rid of your weeds, it has been suggested to spray with powerful distilled vinegar directly on the weeds on a warm day. Understand that this is a chemical type treatment, the acid in vinegar combined with high heat temperatures outside should kill the weeds but it will also damage and kill any plants it gets sprayed on. So please be careful when spraying in and around your garden.

I used all three methods of laying down the plastic, before I started my garden, using mulch (I use the straw), and when needed I spray vinegar on the weeds that I can't seem to get rid of by pulling out. I usually have a pretty weed free garden every year and have to do very little weed control. I hope with these easy suggestions you too can have a weed free garden this year.
