Insects are the worst thing to have in your new tomato garden; they can live in the soil,or in a number of other places. To help keep insects out of your garden, try to eliminate places in the garden as well as near the garden that these insects could be living.Make sure to remove any old leaves or other decaying matter from your yard. Insects love these environments. Also, turn your garden soil regularly to break apart any
clumps of dirt where insects may live underground.
Birds are not often thought of, but can be a pest in the garden. I use to always run outside and chase birds out of my tomato garden, but as soon as I left they came right back. A simple solution is to install a bird feeder in your yard away from the garden. Now instead of destroying my garden, the birds eat at the feeder. Bird feed cost alot less in the long run, versus the cost of the garden seeds and all of your hard work. Although the bird feeder may not completely get rid of the birds, it will greatly reduce the amount feeding on your garden.
If you begin seeing mounds around your yard, and your plants begin wilt, it's safe to say you have a gopher problem. When I began to see this around my yard, I did some extensive research on gophers. Gophers are rodents and can range from 5 inches long to 14 inches long. Typically their fur will be black, light brown, or white. There are gopher traps sold commercially, which is one method of getting rid of them. You have to make sure you locate the gophers tunnels and then set the traps according to the directions. You can also set smoke bombs in the tunnels, which will in turn reach the gophers and run them off.
If you think that your tomato garden is being destroyed by any of the garden pest I mentioned, I urge you to eliminate the problem quickly. The longer the pest are allowed to stay, the more time they have to get established.
