The U.S. economic structure has drastically changed within a short time. Jobs are scarce. When one loses work during this poor economy it can take a year or more to regain employment. Starting an internet business can be the solution for anyone having difficulty finding work. It can be a good way to build and strengthen work skills while being unemployed. It does not take much to start an internet business. All you need is a computer and a high speed internet connection.

What Kind of Internet Business Can I Start?

A person interested in starting an internet business may wonder what can he or she do. Well, the answer is to determine what it is you are good at doing that can be offered as a service or a product. Many people have special skills, talents and hobbies. They range from arts & crafts, knitting, sewing, candy making, baking, writing, designing T-shirts, or consultation. Even though your talent, special skill, or hobby may seem insignificant and obscure, there are people somewhere out in the internet community of hundreds of millions of people who are interested in what you have to offer.

For instance, let us say you know Grandma's receipt for chocolate fudge, and you can make it just as well as she can. You may not be able to do anything else well, and you may only have up to a high school education- or maybe less, but one thing you can do well is make Grandma's chocolate fudge. Making chocolate fudge and selling it over the internet would be a good idea.

How Do I Provide Business Over The Internet?

Once you decide on what you want to do the next step is to get a website. To expose your business on the internet you need a website, which can be expensive. However, the most inexpensive way to start a website is to get a Google blog. A Google blog only cost $10.00 a year. You are given a variety of attractive templets to select from. In addition to text you can post pictures and videos, which would be an excellent way to actually show case your product or service. A Google blog can be a great value and stepping stone for someone with a very limited income.

After you have set up your website, next you must provide a way for customers to contact you. On your website provide a phone number and an email address. Use an email address that will be for your business only. An email address exclusively for your business will separate business related emails from personal emails and make it easier to respond to customers.

How Do I Set Prices?

Another step to take in starting your internet business is setting a sell price. Before setting a sell price, check to see what others offering similar products and services are charging. Because you are just starting out, charge a price less than what competitors charge. A lower price will attract prospecting clients and customers. Even though you charge a lower price you should make the effort to give high quality products and services. High quality products and services at a low cost gains customer trust and confidence.

How Do I Receive Payments?

One good way to collect payments from customers is to have them pay by Paypal. Paypal is an online merchant service. It collects money payments for websites. Payment can be made through Paypal by credit card or by a Paypal account which is similar to a regular bank account. All payments are accumulated and kept in a Paypal account. Paypal keeps account of all money transactions and it will send out payment requests and payment receipt and keep a log of them.

Not all people have credit cards nor Paypal accounts. From such customers you should request to be paid by cashier check or money order. Never accept personal checks.

How Do I Advertise?

A very important factor to offering your products and services to the internet community is advertising. Even though you have a website, months can go by without it being noticed. Your website is just one out of over a billion sites, and it can go without being seen. For instance, let us say you make home make chocolate fudge. If someone wanting to purchase chocolate over the internet they may type in the search terms: selling, chocolate, fudge, and candy. Over 1,000,000 websites may show up. The web lists the sites selling chocolate fudge according to the sites' traffic. Sites with the highest traffic are listed first and the sites with the lowest traffic are listed last. Because your website is new, it would show up at the bottom of the list. A person will most likely choose to purchase chocolate fudge from a site at the top of the list instead of visiting all 1,000,000 websites.

So you wonder what can you do to get your website noticed. The way is to advertise yourself on other websites. Use sites that are visited by people who would be interested in the product or service you are offering. For instance, if you are selling homemade chocolate fudge you would want to contact online magazines, online newsletters, and websites visited by the type of people who would buy chocolate fudge and inquire about advertising on those sites. Such online magazines, online newsletters, and websites would be related to arts& crafts, flowers, jewelry, wine, cooking, candy, women's book clubs, gifts, etc...etc...etc...

When enquiring about advertising, send a formal, friendly, polite email. In the email introduce yourself and your online business. State you are interested in advertising on the websites and ask for the fees. Provide your name, email address, and telephone number.

You will find that advertising is expensive. So try to find the best coverage for the lowest fee, such as $25 per month, $30 per month, or $100 per month.

Although it is a possibility, you may not get rich off of your internet business. However, it can be rewarding. It builds skills in working one on one with individuals, meeting deadlines, and completing work in a timely manner as well as provide a modest source of income. So if you are having trouble finding work, try starting something on the internet. All you need is an idea, a computer, and basic high speed internet connection.
