Simple Tips for Aging in Your Home

Many people are choosing to stay in their homes longer as they are aging. Making your home safe and accessible is not necessarily expensive or difficult. There are projects that can be expensive but most can be done easily and at a low cost.

Door handles:

One of the beneficial changes you can make in you home is changing regular door knobs to levers. Instead of having to turn a knob which may end up being difficult you will only need to press down on a lever handle. Also look at the type of locking mechanisms for interior doors. A push button lock will be easier to operate than a turn lock.

Cabinets and drawers:

Draw and cabinet pulls are another item to consider in making your home more comfortable for use. Larger knobs will be easier to grip. Handles should have enough room for your fingers to grasp. While you are modifying your cabinets remember to place heavy or frequently used items in a comfortable location for you to reach.

Light and lamp switches:

Regular light switches are not usually difficult to operate but a push button switch may be easier. You do not need to install a dimmer switch, just a push button for on and off functions. Check your lamps, if you have any with difficult turn knobs have them repaired or adapted for your use. You may even consider a lamp that works by touching the base. Add night lights in your kitchen, bathroom and hallways and install brighter but energy efficient bulbs anywhere you can.

Stairs and basements:

While ramps can be added to the outside of your home the interior can be more complex. First consider if items you have in your basement can be moved to a more convenient location. If you have your washer and dryer in your basement there may be a place that you can have them installed on your main floor. Escalator and elevator systems are available if you have the finances and space for installation.

Bathrooms:

Simply changing your toilet or toilet seat with one that has a larger rise may help you. Add grab bars that are securely attached to studs in any areas where you may need assistance. Bathtubs can be converted to a walk out type if you have the finances available. If not consider a shower stall with a seat. A hand held shower head can also be very helpful.

For both kitchens and bathrooms consider changing your faucets from knobs to lever operation. There are even faucets available that will turn on and off with a touch. Also consider removing or revising any thresholds. Large bumps in your floor surface from room to room can end up being difficult to maneuver.
