Simple Tips for Boating Safety: Some Things You Might Not Think About

Kyle S.
There are tons of boating accidents every year and most of them can be prevented. Most accidents range from mechanical problems, no horn, lights, and just plain out not paying attention to other boaters. Accidents on the water will happen regardless but you can take some steps each time you get on the boat to prevent some from happening. Take some of these boat safety tips into mind next time you go boating.

The most common boat safety tip would be life jackets. In most states, it's a law and you always have to have life jackets in your boat. Everyone in a boat should always wear a life jacket, especially children. It should be common sense if you can't swim, you should be wearing a life jacket when out on the water. Some life jackets can get pretty pricey but it's going for a pretty important purpose and should not be over looked. It would be scary to think if your boat sank in the middle of a big lake like Lake Michigan and you were stuck with no floatation device.

Always make sure your boat is capable of water travel. This should be one of the most obvious thoughts when it comes to boat safety. A lot of people will always just take the boat out and drop in thinking everything is fine. They get out in the lake and then they get stranded because of mechanical failures. You present an obvious danger if your boat is stranded and incapable of moving. Some boaters may not see you and collide with you. Always makes sure to get your boat checked out every year and always make sure to stock your boat with a flare gun, flares, a whistle and flashlights just incase you get stranded on the water.

Another thing you should always do is to make sure your boat has the proper safety features it should have such as a horn, working front lights and a light pole for the back end. It's one thing to get stranded on the lake in the daytime but at night it is very dangerous and even worse if people can't see you. Lights will provide a beacon so people can help you and at least notice you so they don't end up colliding with you.

Obviously you should never drink on a boat and continue to drive around. When it comes to boat safety, or safety in general it should be an obvious thought. There are laws in most states about open intoxication and public intoxication and the same thing will apply to boats. You will be ticketed if a cop sees you with an open alcohol bottle on the water. You shouldn't be drinking on the water anyways unless there is someone designated to drive for you. Its just like driving a vehicle so the same rules apply, don't drink and drive.

Other things you should do and surprisingly most people don't seem to do would be pay attention to the water. Its just like when people don't pay attention when driving down the road. Most people just assume since the water is much more wide open that those kind of things don't happen real often but it does. Instead of following roads, people can just freely move about as they please. Sometimes you can end up turning square into somebody who you never heard or saw and water accidents can be just as deadly as accidents on the road.

Next time you take a trip onto the water, make sure you take some of these boat safety tips into mind so you can prevent and reduce the chances of unnecessary accidents on the water. Just simple tips like these can make a big difference for those who are new to the great world of boating.
