A clogged garbage disposal creates a lot of problems such as a backup of water on both sides of your sink. We all know there is nothing worse than a clogged kitchen sink because the odor and particles of food floating around will make you sick or at least sick of looking at that mess.

There are a few simple tips that you can do to unclog a garbage disposal or better yet a clogged pipe. Most clogs that people think are the garbage disposal is actually a clogged pipe. However, a clogged pipe can be resolved with a few everyday household items.

You should buy a box of baking soda and a bottle of white vinegar to have at hand to fix a clogged garbage disposal. First, take about half a box of the baking soda and poor it on the side of the sink where the garbage disposal is located and then the other half on the other side. Then take the bottle of white vinegar and poor it in both sides of the sink distributing the majority on the side opposite of the garbage disposal. The side opposite to the garbage disposal is likely the main area where the clogged pipe is located. If you look under your sink you'll see a pipe that is bent like an elbow more than 90% of the time that's where the problem of a clogged kitchen sink happens.

Allow the baking soda and white vinegar to set for about 30 minutes and then pour hot water over the mixture. This should clear the pipes, but if it didn't work there's no alarm to call a plumber yet because you can fix the clogged sink.

If the vinegar and baking soda solution didn't work it's time to start taking the pipes to the sink apart. You'll need a couple of old rags and a bucket because once you disconnect the pipes some gunk will more than likely fall out. Try to isolate the removal of piping only to the elbow pipe because that's where the majority of gunk gets caught and once you clear that it should open your drain lines back up. Once you clear the pipes to the sink turn on your hot water and let it run through the garbage disposal while it's turned on this should clean out any leftover gunk that may still be clogged in the pipe.

Another task to do to remove any garbage disposal odor is to run bleach thru both sides of the kitchen sink and allow the bleach to sit for awhile before flushing with hot water. You can cut up some citrus fruits as well and run thru the garbage disposal, which will add a citrusy flavor throughout the air in your kitchen.

You just saved yourself $100's of dollars by taking care of a clogged garbage disposal or clogged drain yourself.
