Simple Tips to Save Money at the Grocery Store

Autumn Skies
It's getting harder and harder to make ends meet in this economy. Not only are gas prices inflating, but so are food prices. The following are some simple tips on how to save money at the grocery store.

One of the easiest and most important things to do when trying to save money at the grocery store is to have a grocery list. Tack a piece of paper to your refrigerator and add needed items as you run out of them. While you are at the grocery store make a promise to yourself to only buy what is on the list. Having a list keeps you from impulse buying which can really add up at the checkout counter.

Another important tip to help save money at the grocery store is to plan a menu of what you are going to eat for breakfast, lunch, and dinner over the next week. This is probably one of the hardest things for people to do. It's difficult to sit down and decide what to eat from day to day, let alone trying to plan what you're going to eat over the next week. Weekly menu planning helps to prevent unnecessary trips to the grocery store which can add up to a lot of extra unplanned spending. It also helps you from making those mad dash hunger trips to the fast food restaurant for something quick (and usually unhealthy) to eat.

Another great way to save money at the grocery store is to clip coupons. Clipping coupons is fun and easy. (Okay, well, it's easy at least). You can find coupons in your Sunday paper. You can also find coupons on line. Great websites for coupons include coupons.com and couponbug.com. You can save a lot of money on some of your favorite foods and other necessities.

You can also save money at the grocery store by buying foods that are in season. Buying foods that are out of season can be quite costly. A pint of blueberries in the wintertime, for example, can cost as much as four dollars, while summertime blueberries cost half that. If you love fresh berries in the winter months, buy them in the summer and freeze them. Foods can be kept in the freezer for up to six months. Be sure to date your food before storing it away.

With everything getting more and more expensive, pinching pennies is no longer old fashioned. Making a few changes to your grocery shopping habits can save you a bundle.
