Simple Ways to Add Fiber to Your Diet Without Sacrificing Taste

There are very simple ways to add more fiber to your daily diet, and you don't need to add dry powders to your water or take large pills. All you need to do is read the labels of the food you buy. See, our pediatrician told us of the advantages of making sure our son had enough fiber. With this new task, I didn't know how to manage it and still have my finicky kid still eat. All I could think about was the nasty orange flavored powders, the pills or having him eat wheat bread. He would never go for any of those things, so I had to get creative. When I started reading labels, I noticed how easy it was going to be to not only get my son to eat more fiber and not know it, but for my husband, too!

Try these simple steps to add more fiber to your diet and not give up on taste.

Let's start the day with a warm, delicious cup of coffee. Do you like to put sugar or Equal in your coffee? I do, and I have found a way to get extra fiber without sacrificing my coffee. I purchased Splenda with Fiber. Each little packet of Splenda with Fiber has 1 gram of fiber. It doesn't change the flavor of your coffee, and you can't taste anything except the sweet taste of Splenda.

Do you like to have a bowl of cereal with your coffee at breakfast? Why not switching your sugar crunchies for a bowl of Cheerios? For every dry cup of Cheerios, you get 3 grams of fiber. Not bad for a bowl of cereal. Take a look at your sugar crunchies and compare it to Cheerios. There is a definite difference.

Instead of cereal, do you prefer toast with butter and jam? Why not switching your white bread for whole grain white bread? It tastes the same but you get a lot more fiber; 3 grams of fiber for every 2 slices, to be exact. White bread has less than 1 gram, if that much.

For lunch, why not try Fiber One yogurt instead of Yoplait. Yoplait yogurt says on the label that it is not a significant source of dietary fiber. Fiber One has 5 grams of fiber per serving and tastes even creamier than Yoplait. I know this because my son asks for it by name now!

With that cup of yogurt, why not try a bagel? Honey whole wheat bagels have 3 grams of fiber per bagel. They have a lot more fiber and are healthier than that greasy bag of chips in your desk drawer.

For dinner you could substitute your normal pasta for whole grain, multigrain or whole wheat pasta for added fiber. There are many different brands and types, so pick your favorite brand and try something new! Barilla is a favorite; why not click here for more information!

If pasta isn't your game, and you like rice, try Uncle Ben's whole grain brown rice instead of white rice. Whole grain brown rice gives you 2 grams of fiber per serving where white rice only gives you 1. Click here to visit Uncle Ben's website.

How does fresh baked muffins for dessert sound? Try Fiber One homemade muffins. They come in Apple Cinnamon, Blueberry and Banana Nut flavors. Believe it or not, every muffin contains 5 grams of fiber each! It is true, and they are yummy!

A few other ways to add fiber to your diet is to add fresh vegetables to each of your meals. Many kids don't eat vegetables, so if you have one of those in your house, keep in mind that many cereals these days come with extra fiber now. You need to read the labels and watch their sugar content, though. We have tried Fruit Loops and Apple Jacks. The new versions of these old classics come with 3 grams of fiber per serving. If you or your child is hooked on Kellogg's Pop Tarts and must have them on the run to school or work, then you should try Fiber One Toaster Pastries. Pop Tarts only have 1 gram, if that, per pastry, but Fiber One has 5 per pastry, and they passed the kid test in my house!
