When your hair is damaged by heated styling tools, it can quickly become lackluster and brittle. Heat damage can also result in frizz and chronic split ends. In order to avoid heat damage to your hair, you want to start off by using hair products that are made specifically to be used prior to blowdrying or flat ironing. These products, which are typically leave-in sprays, are made with ingredients that are actually activated by the heat of your styling tools and that go to work immediately to hydrate and protect your tresses. There are a plethora of thermal hair protecting products on the market in a wide array of prices. From TreSemme to Bumble & Bumble, rest assured that finding the product that works best for you will be simple.
After washing your hair with a moisturizing shampoo and conditioner, spray or smooth on the leave-in treatment and you are ready to style as usual. If using a blowdryer is part of your beauty regimen, try using only the lowest setting on the dryer. High heat settings will cause your hair to frizz and will also exacerbate the damage as it is virtually burning your hair a little bit each time you use it. With your blowdryer at a lower setting, you are still achieving the style you want with less damage. While it may take a few more minutes than when using the high heat settings, your hair will remain healthier, making those extra minutes a small price to pay for gorgeous hair. The same can be said of using curling and flat irons. Choose a lower level of heat with all of your hair styling appliances in order to avoid damage to the hair cuticle.
If you use heated hair styling tools on a regular basis, you will also want to add a deep conditioning treatment to your weekly beauty routine. With more damaged hair, you will want to deep condition 3 or 4 times a week and for undamaged, or only slightly dry hair you can do with 1 or 2 treatments per week. From heated oils to deep conditioning treatments that you wash off after a few minutes in the shower, these products will help rehydrate thirsty hair making it less brittle, more elastic and able to withstand the heat from blowdyers and styling irons.
Having healthy hair is not something you need to sacrifice in order to use heated styling tools. With a few extra steps added to your beauty routine, you can ensure that your hair stays healthy even while styled on a daily basis. You don't have to give up your blowdryer for fear of damaging your locks anymore. Style away and know that your hair can remain healthy and happy.
