Simple Ways to Beat Sleeplessness.

Having Trouble Sleeping?

If you've ever suffered from insomnia you know just how frustrating it can be. Lying in bed, knowing you need to sleep. "I can't stay up much longer," you tell yourself. "I'll be grumpy and sleepy all tomorrow otherwise." All the while you're lying in bed , trying not to look at your clock, willing yourself to sleep.

So, what can you do to help beat the sleeplessness? The best cures are the obvious ones, which you've probably heard a million times before. There's a good reason for that though: they work.

First, and most obviously, don't drink coffee or black tea before bedtime. Herbal teas (which don't contain caffeine) are fine, but the buzz from coffee and tea may take a lot longer to wear off than you think. Stick of something like peppermint or chamomile tea for the best chance at getting to sleep.

Try and get some exercise during the day too. It doesn't have to be a lot, just half an hour will do. It's a lot easier to get to sleep if your body is tired as well as your mind. As a bonus, you'll benefit health wise from the exercise as well. Make sure to talk to your Doctor about what kind of exercise is best for you if you've got any health problems. There's something suitable for almost everyone, so find out what works for you and get started!

Next, set up a bedtime routine which helps you wind down at the end of the day. Try not to watch TV or use the computer for the half hour before you sleep, as these tend to overstimulate your brain, rather than letting your brain settle down in preparation for sleep. As well as this, try to go to bed at roughly the same time each night, and get up around the same time each morning, even on weekends. It's tempting to sleep in on Saturday and Sunday, but it can really destroy your sleeping patterns for the coming week.

Also, avoid using alcohol to help you sleep. It might seem to work, but the sleep you get isn't of such a good quality and you're much more likely to wake up during the night, not to mention the obvious health issues.

If you've tried all these approaches, it might be time to see a Doctor. Sleep is incredibly important to overall health, and if you aren't sleeping well it is probably affecting you in more ways than you realize.
