Simple Ways to Give Back to Society During the Holidays

Steve Sands
Do you have a desire to give back to society? Are you trying to think of some ways to give back rather than just receiving...especially during the holiday season? Well don't just think about it, go do it. There are lots of simple and easy (and sometimes even fun) things you can do to help give back to your community.

As a teenager, I remember doing all sorts of things with my church youth group to give back to our community. It was easy to do being a part of a group young teens, but now that I've grown I feel like there are so many other things that demand so much of my time. But when I think back to the things we did, they didn't always take a lot of time or even effort. Hey, we can all give back in small ways. Here are just a few ideas to get you started.

Volunteer at a local shelter. Most communities have different types of shelters for the homeless, battered women, children, etc. Many times these shelters rely on the volunteer efforts of people in the community to help with their operations. Drop by one of these shelters and sign up as a volunteer. They need help with all sorts of day to day operations. For instance, you can volunteer to help serve food. It would just be a couple of hours of your time. Sometimes, these shelters will need help fixing the place up. If you are the handy time, you might even enjoy doing some of this volunteer work. I've had the opportunity to volunteer on painting projects, tile work, installing toilets, etc. Try to get a group of friends together and make it even more fun. By the way, try doing this type of volunteer work at different times during the year. Many people tend to just do volunteer work during the holidays. And although this is definitely a good thing, it leaves the charitable organizations with a big need during the other times of the year.

Help tutor a student (young or old) to read. Most local libraries have tutoring programs to help people learn how to read. And it's not just for kids...there are many older people in our communities who need help learning to read too. Go to your local library and find out what programs they have an sign up to volunteer.

Here's a simple one. When you are raking the leaves around your house or mowing the lawn, why not take a few extra minutes to do the same for an elderly neighbor? You're doing the work on your house anyway, so it just takes a little more effort to provide a big help to a neighbor. Would it be nice we everyone was more neighborly? Well, maybe you can start the trend.

Here's another simple idea. Since you are probably cleaning the house to get ready for guests during the holiday, collect old clothes, furniture, and other unwanted items and donate them to charity. Do you really need that old jacket you haven't worn in 3 years? You can make room in your closet and help someone in need at the same time. Even things you may not think would be worthwhile like old towels and blankets can be of use to local animal shelters to help care of their animals.

These are just a few of the many ways you can give back during the holidays. For that matter, you can do these things anytime during the year.
