Simple Ways to Save Energy

Karl Withakay
Money's tight for nearly everyone. Even if it's not for you, it's a good idea to save energy in your home. Let's discuss a few simple ways to save energy. Every little bit helps.
  1. Florescent Type Light Bulbs
These are the bulbs you see that have florescent coils on them and they screw into your regular light socket. You can also get them that are shaped like the old style bulbs so they'll work with all your lamp shades. They are more expensive but they generally last MUCH longer. These type of bulbs use 75% less energy than the older style bulbs. If you replace all your existing bulbs with the florescent type bulbs, you'll notice a considerable difference in your electric bill for the better very soon.
  2. Adjust the Thermostat
If you and your spouse leave for the day to go to work full time, that's about 9 to 13 hours where the house is empty. If you're thermostat is set to 80 degrees Fahrenheit, while you're at work, you're heating an empty house. Now I know you want it to be nice and warm in the house when you get home from work. But just bringing the thermostat down to 72 degrees from 80 degrees while you're out of the home can make a considerable difference.
  3. Seal Up Drafty Windows.
A lot of older homes have drafty windows. Now this isn't the most attractive way to seal up your windows but it's cheap and simple. Take some clear plastic, cut some long strips of some thin cardboard. Lay the sheet of plastic over your window frame and with tacks or small nails, lay the strip of cardboard over the edge of the plastic and tack or nail the plastic to the window frame. You'll find your home much easier to heat in the winter time if you do this. This is meant to be a temporary fix until you can afford to have the windows replaced.
  4. Turn off and Unplug your TV and Home Computer
Just because you're not using your computer and it's not on and just because your TV is not on does not mean that they are not using energy. Fact is, most of today's televisions and home computers are using power even when they are not turned on.
  5. Use the Laptop Computer
If you have a laptop AND a desktop type computer, when you're able, fire up the laptop instead of the desktop. Laptop computers draw only 15 to 25 watts while you're using them. Your desktop computer uses about 150 watts between the computer and monitor.
  6. Turn Off The Lights!
Experts say that about 11% of our home energy expense is from lighting our home. Turning off the lights as soon as we're done using them will make a difference in our power bill AND our light bulbs will last longer.
  7. Wash With Cold Water
Wash your clothes with cold water. Up to 90% of the expense associated with washing your clothes is from heating the water. Only use hot water on VERY dirty clothes.
  8. Close Doors And Vents
Close doors and vents to unused rooms. Why heat or cool a room that no one is in?
