Simple Ways to Save on Your Grocery Budget

With the cost of food skyrocketing in this economy, a grocery budget is an absolute necessity in most households. But how do you get the most for your money? Here are a few simple ways to save on your grocery budget.

Grocery Budget Savings with Coupons. Not surprisingly, coupons are one of the easiest ways to save on your grocery budget. Available online and in local newspapers, coupons can help you save hundreds of dollars a month. For easiest use, keep track of your coupons in a binder or small recipe card box. When planning your shopping list, figure in items you have coupons for into your grocery budget.

Grocery Budget Savings with Generic Brands. Purchasing generic brands over name brands is another way to save on your grocery budget. While many people have favorite brands when it comes to certain items, for others buying generic has no difference. (For example, buying generic brand dried pasta or cereals can save you several cents per purchase.) While it may only save you a few pennies each time, this amount definitely adds up when it comes to your grocery budget!

Grocery Budget Savings with Price Matching. Does your local grocery store price match competitors? If you do not already know, ask a manager. Price matching can enable you to save a ton of money on your grocery budget, all while keeping you from wasting gasoline by driving all over town. Save the weekly advertisements from all local grocery stores. Price check any item on your list with the current prices listed. Again, it may only save a few cents on your grocery budget but it does add up!

Grocery Budget Savings by Stocking Up. Stockpiling is a wonderful way to save on your grocery budget. Many canned goods and frozen products last for weeks or months before spoiling. Pay attention to when your local grocery store has these items on sale. Purchase several and keep them on hand for use. If you have an extra chest freezer or upright freezer, purchase cuts of meat when they are on markdown as they are usually one of the most expensive items within a grocery budget.

By incorporating these simple tips into your weekly planning, you will start to see the savings on your grocery budget add up.
