Simple Ways to Take a Little Time And Make a Big Difference

Volunteers collectively agree that the benefits of community service far outweigh the cost or effort to give. Helping others is an act that is both virtuous and kind. In addition to the satisfaction of having helped others, people often receive other "perks," such as building lifelong relationships, finding an increased sense of purpose, and possibly learning new skills. By giving of your time, you can help make your community a better, safer, and more pleasant place to live.

Some people think that by volunteering, you have to take on some massive responsibilities; however, not every volunteer effort has to change the world. In fact, small gestures can make a big difference. Here are some simple ways you can have a positive impact your community.

Volunteer as a tutor for an after-school program or other non-profit educational organization. There are many school programs that are looking for volunteer tutors. Find one that needs help and make a big impact on a child's grades.

Help an elderly neighbor with physical chores (i.e. raking leaves, shoveling snow, planting flowers or doing home repairs). Not only will this keep your neighbor from over-exerting themselves or spending their fixed income on these items, but this time spent is also a great way to get to know them even better.

Give away free flowers or seeds in the spring. This simple gift is one that will keep on giving.

Take your pet to the local senior center. Happy pets usually brighten anyone's day. The elderly would love to have visitors from you and your furry friend.

Organize a summer cleaning or painting of the local school. The children and teachers in your community will be grateful for the school's facelift.

Bring a carload of newspapers, towels, and blankets to an animal shelter. The animals will feel a little more at home with the help of your donations.

Ask a local teacher what supplies his or her class needs most, and then donate them. Nothing is worse than having students that don't have all the supplies they need for a productive school year. Make sure a child gets the most out his school's lessons and projects by donating the supplies they need.

Organize a community yard sale with the proceeds (and leftover items) to be donated to charity. Everyone has items that are just taking up space in their home. Use this opportunity to clear some space, while doing something beneficial for the community.

Visit the local hospital and play games with the patients. This small act will bring lots of joy to those under the weather.

If you possess a useful skillset, offer a free seminar to others. Are you a whiz at crocheting or sewing? Or are you pretty handy around the house? These are great skills that many others will appreciate and would love to learn. Use this opportunity to give to others.

These suggestions are simple deeds that take a little time, but can make a big difference. Your efforts will benefit both you and the persons who are receiving your kind acts. Each time you volunteer, you make someone's world a little better.
