Simple Ways of Tracking Household Expenses

Lee VanAmee
One of the biggest reasons we procrastinate when tracking our household expenses is an emotional one; it could be that we do not want to deal with what we find out or we do not want to cut back on more of the things that bring us pleasure or even some other emotional reactions you come up with. But usually the task itself is not so daunting. It just boils down to getting some paperwork together and coming up with numbers.

So, the first line of defense is to get your emotional reaction out of the way first. Once you figure out what the reasoning is you can go forward task wise and take care of how ever many steps you are ready for in a set time that you have set for yourself. That way you don't feel rushed or you don't feel like this activity is another emergency you must take care of when you are already strapped for time. You may even come up with some good news with your tracking, so don't automatically assume a negative position for this assignment.

Common sense will tell you that you need to be accurate and complete when coming up with all of the expenses that go into you household budget. But too often we either think we know in our heads or we have a certain idea of a cost and don't pay attention to really putting down the real costs that go into our day to day and month to month payments. This means when you put down that you pay $800.00 a month in rent, but don't include that you had to pay a late fee, or that your rent will increase in 3 months, you will not have accurate figures to manage. Also when you spend money on an item, you may have bought a new TV, or stereo, or furniture, but you also need to include set up fees or delivery costs, even if it was pizza for the guys from next door who helped you out.

Plain and simple is best of course and to keep every receipt in a place where you record it weekly, the reason you need to do this weekly is because it is way too easy to let this go if you just sit down monthly or quarterly or as usual yearly when you do your taxes. This also let's you know current data that you are spending too much in one area and not enough in another; if you have a brand new entertainment set up and are being foreclosed upon by your mortgage company you may want to rethink your expense budget. Also, if you are paying late fees or extra interest costs for rent or mortgage each month, you may need to research and find a better deal.
