Simple Winter Hair Care Tips

The long winter months really assault hair in a terrible way, failing to prepare it for the the absolute most rigorous season of the year is not a very smart move in the long run. It doesn't take tons of money or constant visits to the salon to keep your hair healthy and looking great. There are several things you can do yourself at home, as well as over the counter products you can use to have vibrant tresses. Your natural hair care should be adjusted to keep it from being damaged, which is caused by the elements. Often, people who don't normally have many problems with their hair will experience a flaky, itchy scalp and dandruff. Dry, dull, and brittle hair needs strength and shine to give your appearance a polished glow. Harsh conditions like cold and wind strip the cuticle (the outermost layer of the hair strand), making it rough and susceptible to dryness and static.

Keeping your hair covered keeps the wind at bay and decreases flyaways. Always have hats and scarves on hand to keep you warm, and your hair healthy. Cotton hats generate less static than wool or acrylic. If you don't want to forego a nice wool cap, then you can wear a bandana or scarf underneath. Soft head coverings also prevent roughness and breakage when putting them on and taking them off. Make sure that your hair is totally dry before putting on any hats, as doing otherwise will set your hair in a certain position. You can add volume to your hair by pulling it toward the front and top of your head in a clip or scrunchie. This will also help to fight the hat head people often have while wearing head gear in the winter.

Nourish your hair starting with what you eat each day. Any foods containing natural oils will help offset the dryness caused by nasty weather. Different types of nuts, olive oil, cocoa butter, shea butter, and flaxseed oils can be consumed to give your hair a healthy shine. Essentail fatty acids are the "good fats," Many Americans are Omega-3 deficient because of the over-processed diets and fast food habits we maintain. The human body needs these to manufacture and repair cell membranes, which enables our cells to obtain optimum nutrition, thus why consuming them gives us smooth hair and skin. Some foods that contain essential fatty acids are walnuts, pumpkin seeds, Brazil nuts, sesame seeds, avocados, some dark leafy green vegetables (such as kale, spinach, purslane, mustard greens, collards, etc.), canola oil (cold-pressed and unrefined), soybean oil, wheat germ oil, salmon, mackerel, sardines, anchovies, albacore tuna, and other veggies or fruits. Those on the go will fair much better with supplements to keep their hair shiny and strong. Flaxseed oil, Omega-3, and fish oil capsules may be purchased at any healthfood store or retail chain for a low price.

Be kind to your hair, especially in the devastating cold of the season. Avoid using heating appliances as much as possible, so that you won't further damage your hair more than necessary. Most stylists will tell you that hair does not require shampooing every day while in cold conditions. Even the most oily of hair becomes brittle at this time of year. Every other day is more than enough for a good wash, and will cut down on having to constantly heat your locks. Heat opens the follicles just as it does your skin's pores, leaving it accepting to destruction. A dandruff shampoo, conditioner, and leave in will combat breakage. You can rinse your hair with cool water when washing in a conditioner. What leave ins you use is basically a preference and depends on the type of hair you have. Consulting with a stylist or beauty consultant in a salon supply store will give you a great idea as to what products to use on the cheap. Those with very dry hair will want to use something heavier, such as an oil based hair lotion, while those looking for light conditioning may want to use a shine spray. These simple techniques will keep your hair stylish and healthy all winter long.
