Two babies, one 6 months and one nine month, were trapped in their cribs, and died from suffocation. A one year old died in a newer model crib that has not yet been recalled but is being investigated, according to the Consumer Product Safety Commission. The recalled cribs were sold through Mat 2007.
The common factor in all three tragic deaths was the drop-rail side of the cribs. In all 3 cases, the rail was installed upside down by the consumers. That causes a gap in the crib that small children can get trapped in and then suffocate.
According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, there have been 55 reports of similar cases where the drop sides of cribs have detached, and of hardware not holding the drop side rail to the crib.
The cribs were made in China, and Simplicity Inc., of Reading, Pa. is listed as the manufacturer. Retailers such as Target, Big Lots, Babies R Us, and Meijer Inc sold the cribs. The cribs sold under the brands of Simplicity and Graco, and sold for about $100 to $300. The cribs were sold from Jan.1998 through May 2007.
Simplicity released a statement that says none of the cribs that the company currently supplies to stores are included in the recall.
The Consumer Product Safety Commission warns that people if they have the newer cribs not on the recall list to check the drop side of the cribs and make certain they are installed correctly and securely attached.
Consumers should call the company or check the web site, www.Simplicityforchildren.com/ The number to call is 1-888-593-9274.
