Simply Sunlight - How Solar Power Works

Solar powered energy comes in many forms and is used in a variety of ways around the home or office. The two most common products of solar powered energy are electricity and heat. While heat can be generated through the conversion of sunlight by specialized equipment, light is generated differently.

The best use for solar power is to generate energy for items that do not have a heat or huge electricity requirement. Large appliances, such as a dryer or a stove require a great deal of electricity to generate enough heat to work properly. While solar power can provide the energy for units such as these in order to help them operate, it will usually not be enough to generate the necessary amount of heat for them to function fully. As such, solar power may be best used in combination with other more traditional methods, such as natural gas.

The use of solar power to produce electricity is called, "photovoltaic". Through the use of specialized, silicone solar panels, the energy from the sun can be used to power electronics. Electricity is generated when the panels are exposed to sunlight. The sun is more likely to produce a greater amount of energy depending on what time of day it is, what the weather is like and the temperature of the air. Calculations on how much electricity will be generated at any given time of day are made by taking all of the elements into consideration and predicting an outcome.

The energy that is generated by a solar panel is measured in watts. The wattage that a solar panel will most likely generate is calculated based on the amount of peak sun hours each day at any given point during the year.

Because using solar power to generate electricity is fast becoming a popular form of alternative energy, the means to modify a home or other structure with solar absorbing cells is quickly becoming more cost-effective for the average consumer. Solar powered electricity and energy will most likely continue to grow in demand as the world continues to search for more ways to generate energy and, at the same time, continues to drain the earth of many precious, natural resources.

One of the drawbacks of relying solely on solar powered energy is the generally low output of solar panels. As mentioned above, solar power is a great alternative to producing electricity for appliances that do not require much heat; however, there is often not enough energy to provide electricity for large equipment. Also, solar power is powered by the sun, so, it would follow that if the sun is not present, such as in the overnight hours or when it is being blocked, solar power can be an intermittent and unreliable source of electric generation.

When being used for other means, such as powering a car, solar power must be converted. It is most likely not practical to place solar absorbent materials on every appliance. Similarly, it is not efficient to provide each appliance with an inverter to transform the solar generated DC into AC, which is the type of current used in power that is generated by traditional plants. Even so, it may be that, as predicted, the benefits will far outweigh the costs in the future when traditional power methods are difficult to find in the natural environment.
