Singing to Your Chakras

According to Ayurvedic medicine, humans have seven energy centers that correspond with different body systems and different aspects of life. These centers are aligned vertically from the perineum to the crown, and when healthy, their energies radiate in a symmetrical manner. The hectic nature of modern life being what it is, we often lose that alignment and symmetry in our chakras, causing a disruption in our energetic vibrations. When that happens, think of yourself as a guitar that needs to be tuned. Sound is an energetic vibration with the power to restore coherence in the energies of our chakras. Here's a way to "tune" your chakras in order to achieve more balance in your day.

Lie down on a flat, hard surface, like a yoga mat or the floor. Close your eyes and take several deep breaths to calm your mind. Focus on the Root Chakra, which is at the base of your spine, or your perineal area. We're going to assign it a musical note, and an energetic vowel; in this case, the sound "UH." Take a deep breath and on exhale, begin a long chant, "UHHHHHHHHH." Give it a very low pitch, the lowest pitch you can make. While you chant, continue focusing on your Root Chakra and picture a red glow emanating from the area. Repeat this chant seven times.

Next comes the Sacral, or 2nd Chakra, located in your groin. The vowel for this chakra is a long "u" sound, like "OOH." Take a deep breath and chant on exhale, "OOOOOOOOOOH." Make the pitch one note higher than the last, and imagine that your 2nd Chakra is glowing orange. This time take that orange glow and connect it with the red glow of the Root Chakra, aligning the two energy centers. Also repeat seven times.

Repeat the steps for the 3rd Chakra, the Solar Plexus Chakra. The vowel is "OH," a long "o" sound, and the color is yellow. Again, the chant should be one note higher than the last, repeated seven times. Connect the 3rd chakra with the first two chakras, aligning them.

The remaining chakras are as follows:

4th Chakra, the Heart Chakra: The vowel is "AH," the color is green.

5th Chakra, the Throat Chakra: The vowel is "I," pronounced "eye," the color is blue.

6th Chakra, the Third Eye Chakra: The vowel is "A," rhyming with "hey," the color is indigo.

7th Chakra, the Crown Chakra: The vowel is "EEE," the color is purple.

Remember to make each chant a note higher than the last, and to repeat each chant seven times. Don't forget to connect each chakra to all the ones before it as you chant! After singing to the Crown Chakra, continue to lie where you are, breathing in the vibrations that remain in the silence. Feel the energy flowing freely from root to crown. Then slowly open your eyes and get on with your day with a greater sense of balance and harmony. Happy vibrating!
