Single Boomers

Managing Singlehood Throughout Middle Age

FGual
Your friends all got married, then divorced, or not. During that time they became parents, or not. And through it all you remained single, and still are. And as always, you return to that house full of memories, some pleasant, some not. That house where you all grew up, and your parents grew old.

Through the years that went round and round, you kept wondering, why me? why did I remain alone? Maybe it was not meant to be, maybe it's God's will, maybe he had another plan for my life. Or maybe you're just afraid. Afraid to get close, afraid of giving up your precious freedom, which you love more than anything. More than even yourself. Many times you dread family gatherings, when all the kids show up. Or that new love in someone's life, the one you don't have.

As you arrive at middle age, you often notice the alienation between children and parents. The longing to be free among those marriages you thought were solid, and would last forever.Teenagers seem lost and aloof, and you can't understand why, when they have everything. Then it dawns on you that your married siblings are keeping you at a distance. They really don't want you around, as you are the "odd" one or the "black sheep."

As your parents gets even older, separation anxiety grows on you. Someday they will be gone, and repressed feelings get magnified. When will that dreaded call arrive? They are dead, they are gone. They were the anchor that you always came back to, the one you could never replace. If you are estranged from your siblings, it will be even tougher. There is another side to this, however. Their approaching demise could be a calling to a more authentic self .A new beginning, when old dreams are re-examined and either dusted off or thrown away. It could launch your life in a new direction, and maybe when taking a singles cruise that love you never had may finally appear.
