Single Mom's Guide to Getting Her Own Place

Jennifer Glennon
Many single moms spend the first years of their children's lives living with family members; this at first is a great option. It helps the single mom save money and make ends meet. Family member's can even chip in to help take care of the children. This for many single moms trying to make it as a single parent is a lifesaver. After a while it is necessary for a single mom to move out on her own and establish her own house for her children. This may seem like a very difficult undertaking for many individuals. A single mom can get her own place for her and her children with a little planning and thought this move will not be as hard as the world makes it out to be.

A single mom needs to research the area into which she plans on getting her own place. One of the most important things that she will need to take into account is day care. If she will be paying for day care, she will need to make sure there is an inexpensive day care nearby. Many single moms rely on family to watch the children while they are working. For the single mom, who is using this route, she will need to make sure that the family member's residence is with 10 miles from where she is looking to move.

Price research is the next logical step in the process of the single mom getting her own place. Most single moms will need to start out in a rental of some sort. An apartment is a great first option for a single mom moving out from living with family. There are many websites that offer a look at what rent prices are for the number of bedrooms that she will need. This should be only the first step in the research process. The nest step should be going to the leasing office complexes that she may be interested in and taking to a leasing agent. The single mom needs together information about rent, security deposit, application fees, and what utilities are included.

As the single mother goes around to the different complexes getting information on prices, it is important for her to see what type of environment it is. This is a place where she will need to feel comfortable raising her children. The most important thing that a single mom needs to think about is does she feel safe living there.

The next step is to sit down and make a budget. The single mom needs to be able to cover the rent and expenses of the apartment. There needs to be enough money leftover after expenses to cover and emergencies that may arise. A single mom then needs to figure out how much money she will need in savings to make this move. She should have enough to cover 2 months rent, security deposit, application fee, and enough to turn on all utilities.

When she has saved up the needed amount of money, it is time to apply for the apartment. After submitting the application the single mom should start asking friends and family if they have any spare furniture that she may be able to have to furnish her new place. She can use places like Salvation Army to fill in any other furniture that she may need.

Finally the single mom should gather all of her friends for a big move in day party. She should supply drinks and pizza for the help of her friends moving all of her and her children's stuff into her own place.
