Siobhan Magnus Sings "When You Believe" by Mariah Carey & Whitney Houston
American Idol Songs of Inspiration: April 20, 2010
American Idol Mentor: Advice from Alicia Keys to Siobhan Magnus
Alicia Keys was the mentor this week on American Idol. Since this week is Idol Gives Back week Alicia was the perfect fit for the "Songs of Inspiration Theme". Alicia Keys has been a champion for HIV/AIDS victims in Africa.
Alicia said that "When You Believe" was 'no easy fete' to sing. She advised Siobhan should take the high notes and the moment by pausing to enjoy the song. She also said that most people can't do that.
Siobhan Magnus' "When You Believe" Performance
Siobhan was on stage with a string orchestra. Siobhan was wearing black feather in her hair and butterflies on her shoulder and her arm.
Siobhan started out slow and she sounded nasally with her lower notes. She hit the higher notes well but I didn't notice the pause that Alicia advised her to take. The high notes are the major concern for this song.
What the Judges said about Siobhan Magnus' "When You Believe" Performance
Randy Jackson: Said that Siobhan picked the toughest song of the night. He said it was just an okay performance.
Ellen DeGeneres: Ellen disagreed with Randy. She said the performance was a confirmation of why she is competing.
Kara DioGuardi: Kara said that the song may have been technically really well sung but American Idol is not a musical. She said the song was starting to feel dramatic and she still doesn't know who Siobhan is.
Simon Cowell: Agreed with Randy. He said that it was old fashioned arrangement and too much happened too quickly in the song. He was also distracted by the 'leaves'. Simon was corrected and told that they were butterflies and all he could say was the whole was just a bit odd.
Siobhan Magnus has a spectacular voice and I wish she would stay with more upbeat songs. I think she could make a pretty good rocker. Ballads like "When You Believe" are just not her style. I know she doesn't want to be put into an American Idol mold or define who she is as an artist but I think her niche should be rock.

Post a Comment"When You Believe" was a shining performance which showed Siobhan's versatility & beautiful vocals.....bravo!
Personally, I loved her version of that song & her performance was amazingly emotive. Loved the falsetto! Her vocal range is suberb & was well executed.
I have to agree her voice gets to me, she is trying too hard!
great recap!
Thanks for the review.. :o)
Yes - but this is American Idol and the "Inspirational" song list contained numerous slow ballads that had limited opportunity to display creativity, range, or dynamics for a female, especially a soprano. In addition, there were many items on that list that should have been ideal for the "blues" singers (especially the alto/tenor/Baritone). On the other side of the spectrum were "honey pots" or traps (items on many critics what not to sing list).
Am I surprised that Siobhan took on the challenge of the DUAL DIVA trap? Yes. Am I pleased that she did so well? You bet.
I've heard about this girl from my mom who loves her but thinks she is going to come in second. From what I heard of her voice, I think she could have done spectacularly with "When the Children Cry" by White Lion
I agree with you, Kim. When she tries to sing ballads, she actually gets on my nerves. She should stick with rock. cheers :)
Nice reporting!
