"Sip and See" an Alternative to a Baby Shower

Classy Momma
Baby showers have traditionally been a way of honoring an expectant mother and celebrating the upcoming birth. The traditional baby shower that we know today consists of presents, games, and food and became popular after the baby boom of World War II. Originally only intended for female guests the popularity of couples baby showers has grown and include baby shower games that the men can participate in. Even though times have changed, some men still feel a bit uncomfortable attending a baby shower. An alternative to a baby shower is a "Sip and See".

A "Sip and See" is a celebration that honors the newborn child and his or her family. This tradition has roots in the south but its popularity is spreading. Since the event is considered a "Sip and See" and not a baby shower, men seem more comfortable attending. The term "Sip and See" describes exactly what happens at the event, guests sip on drinks and look at the baby. This event is normally held a month or so after the baby is born and is normally hosted by a friend or relative. A "Sip and See" is an open house celebration where guests come and go as they please between given hours. There are normally no games played and gifts are not expected as they are for a baby shower.

If you would like to host a "Sip and See" here is a basic list of what you will need:

Invitations- incorporate the "Sip and See" invite with the birth announcement

Beverages- both alcoholic and non-alcoholic

Light Finger Foods- small wraps, cheese balls, crackers, fruit and vegetable trays

Minimal Decorations- a bouquet of flowers is all you need

Antibacterial Gel- the baby is likely to be passed around by many adoring fans, so don't be afraid to ask guests to use the gel or wash their hands first

Guest Favors- small bottled beverages of choice (water or wine) wrapped with a custom label

Guest favors are recommended because even though gifts are not expected with a "Sip and See" there will be those who bring a baby gift. Guest favors are a classy way of thanking people for taking time out of their busy lives to take a peek at the baby and check on the family.

In addition to a "Sip and See" being a great alternative to a baby shower that is appealing to men, it is also a fabulous way to celebrate the birth of a second child. Traditionally, proper etiquette for a second child is to not hold a huge baby shower and limit it to family only if having one at all. Since a "Sip and See" is about seeing the baby and not all about gifts, it is the perfect answer to the etiquette dilemma.

As the popularity of "Sip and Sees" begins to grow, they may not be limited to babies. You could begin receiving "Sip and See" invitations to celebrate any of the following events: new home, revamped backyard, new puppies, wedding pictures, cosmetic surgery results......the possibilities are endless.

I love the Sip N See idea! I guess I have actually had one of these before. I show dogs, and we had about 30 people over to see our last litter. The funny thing is that some folks actually brought gifts - too funny!

I really like this idea! My husband was all too happy to come to my multiple baby showers. ( I am blessed with great friends and family). Most men that I know however, would not have been so gracious. I know I will be sharing this concept with others!

What a fantastic concept. I bet your article will help spread this wonderful idea far and wide. Could I do a sip and see for when I clean my house??!!
