Sir Charles Barkley Wants to Be a NBA GM

Bryan Mckinley
Most everybody I know dislikes Charles Barkley and you can't blame them. Why? Because I live in Ohio and Barkley bashes on Cleveland more often than he eats. I know it's hard to imagine Chuck choosing anything over food, and from one fat guy to another Charles, I get it. I'm a hometown fan and for that reason, I guess I should hate Charles Barkley, too. The problem is I just can't seem to bring myself to do it.

In all truth, I like Charles Barkley. Don't get me wrong, even I know he is a big dumb idiot, but that is part of what I like about him. He is entertaining and I think he can be down right hilarious. Sometimes it's on purpose, other times it's just because of the fact he is an idiot. Isn't that what really matters? He is on television talking about the NBA; his job isn't to be nice. His job is to entertain us, and that is one area he doesn't struggle in.

Barkley is a hall-of-famer who was once one of the greatest players in the NBA. Everybody seems to forget how truly good he was. He retired in 2000 as one of only four NBA players to have 20,000 points, 10,000 points and 4,000 assists. The other three are Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Wilt Chamberlain, and Karl Malone. During the latter part of his career, Barkley played the power forward position even though he is only 6 feet 4 inches tall. In the 1986-87 season, Barkley set an NBA season record by becoming the shortest player to ever lead the league in rebounds.

It seems like all the talk nowadays about Barkley is how he is a gambler or about something idiotic he did. These same people seem to miss how generous Barkley is with giving to charities and how he is actually a celebrity that has a sense of humor. He has no qualms about people poking fun at him and will even join in, you just better be able to take it in return.

Barkley was on Leno last night and, of course, that means he voiced his opinion on everything. From Sammy Sosa being white, to why he doesn't want to go into politics anymore. One thing that Leno brought up that I hadn't been aware of is Barkley wanting to become an NBA GM. Honestly, I think he would do fine as a GM, but I am one person that would prefer he change his mind. I think Barkley is perfect where he is now, making halftime shows and post game analysis sometimes more entertaining than the game itself.
