Sirens

Olga L. Chacon
Every time I hear them,
I think about dad driving,
pain running
through his chest
like a sword...

Before he hit the post
next to the curve,
his consciousness
had already left him.

On the way
to the hospital,
they pumped and pumped,
but no possible action
could reverse
the moment when
his cold body
decided to stay
at rest.
