Sister Slam and the Poetic Motor Mouth Road Trip by Linda Oatman High - Book Review

Denise
This is a different book and an easy read as it is done in poetry. Sister Slam and the Poetic Motor Mouth Road Trip by Linda Oatman High is a young-adult fiction book that is fun as well as full of feeling. This is about Laura Crapper, a teenager who is overweight, and a 'hippie-Gothic rocker chic', her best friend is Twig, a skinny girl who has her own style also. Both of them like to write poetry, so they decide that they should go on the road in Laura's mom's old car and go compete in a poetry slam in New Jersey.

Laura doesn't feel great about her size, and she is sometimes sad about her mother who died when she was very young. Laura has her father, who is concerned when she wants to take off for the summer. Twig, her parents are the kind that don't care about what she does.

Along the way things happen to them, like getting into three fender benders. They learn some things about themselves, and others as each chapter highlights what they shouldn't have done. The highpoint of the book is getting in a car accident with a rich gorgeous guy named Jake who actually likes Laura a lot.

They don't win the slam, but they get some recognition and are immediately grabbing their fifteen minutes of fame. As Twig and Sister Slam perform around the city, Jake is always around cheering them on and staying in touch with Laura. His character is a cool musician, who's parents are rich, but they are cool also, no snobbery which is a breath of fresh air. When a near tragic thing happens, she has to return home. She takes a normal summer job, and close to the holidays doesn't hear from Jake in a long time.

Does he really love her? Will he come back to her and will her poetic dreams of being Sister Slam come back to life? This is a YA book that I happened to read awhile back. I love books where the fat girl gets the most gorgeous guy and lives the life of her dreams, so this is a four star book to me. Mostly poetry, It took me a day to read.

It's everything a Young Adult book should be. From hitting a pig with their car, fighting a judge and losing the contest, crashing into Jake and the heroine, Laura finally becoming victorious living the life of her dreams. Sister Slam and the Poetic Motormouth Road Trip is funny, cool and sweet. It would have been five stars if it weren't for occasional swearing.
