Sister Wives Stars, Kody Brown, Meri, Janelle, Christine and Robyn Face Jail Time and $50,000 Fine

Mitestarossa
Sister Wives' stars, Kody Brown, Meri, Janelle, Christine and Robyn face up to five years in jail and up to a $50,000 fine for third degree felony bigamy. Is it worth it? If they go to jail, who will get the kids, foster care?

When the Brown family allowed a TLC (The Learning Channel) reality television program to air about their polygamist lifestyle they thumbed their nose at law enforcement. With such a blatant display of illegal activity do they actually expect the district attorney in Utah to ignore their crimes?

Even if they get light sentences and small fines, they will still spend hundreds of thousand of dollars on legal fees. Because Kody Brown decided to display his family on national television, law enforcement has no other choice than to go after him for his crimes.

Is it a crime, even if they are not actually married? Yes, in the state of Utah, it is a crime to have multiple wives even if they only live together.

The Brown family claims that they are doing the show to gain compassion and understanding for their lifestyle so that their kids will have it easier. They believe that it should be allowed under religious freedom.

Not everything can be allowed under religious freedom. You can believe in whatever you want to believe right now in America, but that does not mean that you can victimize others.

What would happen if polygamy was legal in America? What would happen if everyone did it? First of all, there would be millions of "lost boys" because there would not be enough women for every man to have multiple wives. There may also be hungry mouths because not every man would be able to feed and take care for that many people and finally it would open the door for women and children to be victimized and abuse.

TLC was probably only thinking about their bottom line when they first thought of the show, but they should have realized at some point that it was illegal and canned it.

Meri Brown was probably feeling guilty about not giving Kody any children when she first agreed to become polygamists. She is still feeling guilty today that she was only able to give him one child. She is the only one that admits that she is jealous of the other wives and most likely the first one to leave when her daughter turns 18.

Did Robyn understand that it was illegal to be a polygamist when she agreed to marry Kody Brown? Does she know that she may lose her children, go to jail and pay a fine? At least she has an ex husband to take her kids when she is in jail. Meri, Janelle and Christine do not have that luxury, the state will probably take their kids.

After they serve their jail time, pay their fines and legal fees, can they still continue to be polygamists? No, they cannot. They will be charged again and face stiffer fines and longer jail times if they continue this illegal activity.

If the Sister Wives Stars, Kody Brown, Meri, Janelle, Christine and Robyn did not want to face jail time and a $50,000 fine, then they should not have gone on national television and flaunted their illegal activity. Thanks, TLC for ruining another family.

This is actually Kirklyn's Mothers opinion about Sister Wifes.

Today we allow men to marry men, women to marry women, and these couples are even allowed to adopt children.

I may not live my life the way you would approve or you may not live the way I believe, but my Lord is my judge, not you. I am not the judge of others, from what I have seen, and yes I watch the Browns when they are on, they are living the way they did in the way they did in the old testament.

Each family raises their families the way they were and this is the way each of us has learned for many years.

I see in the Browns a family who has a lot of love and they take care of their own.

Why is it good TV to watch all the sex, sexual abuse, and the junk of "kate plus 8" or "19 and counting" or "Teenage MOM" really there has to be better show to view..

    Well that is my opinion.

    Mitestarossa,

You realize that Lawrence v. Texas is the law of the land, correct? Under Lawrence, consenting adults are allowed to have familial relationships, right?

Let me post a pertinent part:

The present case does not involve minors. It does not involve persons who might be injured or coerced or who are situated in relationships where consent might not easily be refused. It does not involve public conduct or prostitution. It does not involve whether the government must give formal recognition to any relationship that homosexual persons seek to enter. The case does involve two adults who, with full and mutual consent from each other, engaged in sexual practices common to a homosexual lifestyle. The petitioners are entitled to respect for their private lives. The State cannot demean their existence or control their destiny by making their private sexual conduct a crime. Their right to liberty under the Due Process Clause gives them the full right to engage in their conduct

I honestly don't see what's wrong with living that lifestyle. There are after all more females than males, and if people want to live that way then they should be able to too. I enjoyed the show, I've always wondered how a family that had a few more mother's would function. And I can actually relate to a few of the mother's on the show. I look forward to their second season coming in March.

C, if we allowed everyone in society to do what they wanted to because it was their choice, we would not want to live in society. There are reasons that we have laws. There are reasons that bigamy is illegal.

Here's how I look at it. They all WILLINGLY participated in this lifestyle. it was a choice they all made, no one forced them to do it. If that is how they want to live then so be it, I do not judge them for it. It is not a lifestyle i would choose for myself but thats just me. If this is what they all want and they are happy then i do not think anyone should have anything to say about it. and as for all of you that say "if polygamy was legal its not fair for some men because they won't have a woman to marry if men had multiple wives" well i think you are just stupid if you think that EVERY man in America would choose to live this way. you all need to move on with YOUR own lives.

Dawn, I don't think you would be happy in a lawless society. Should we allow marriage to animals if that is what someone wants or marriage to children? This type of behavior affects our society and therefore "concerns me personally". If everyone were allowed to practice polygamy our society would deteriorate. Where would all of the lost boys find wives?

  • dawn10/27/2010

I think that it still remains, to each is there own. I wouldnt live in that sort of marraige but if my sister wanted to that is her place, If I agree with it or not. I think the law gets involved with to many things. If they all agree to it then that is the way it is. Move on and stop worrying about things that dont concern you personaly.
