Sitemeter Internet Explorer Bug Causes Internet-Wide Problems

Internet Explorer Cannot Open the Internet Site

Mark Whittington
An Internet wide bug has occurred for all websites that use sitemeter. Any Internet Explorer 6.0 or 7.0 browser that attempts to load a page that used sitemeter will receive the following message: "Internet Explorer cannot open the internet site" as a popup. Click "yes" on the popup and one will get an "operation aborted message" and then a directory page listing some variations of the page one tried to load.

Firefox and other non Microsoft browsers apparently still work in loading pages that use sitemeter. The "Internet Explorer cannot open the internet site" bug has been known to have happened intermittingly for the past year or so, but the current situation is the worse instance thus far. Tens of thousands of blogs and web pages use sitemeter. The "Internet Explorer cannot open the internet site" bug appears to have started on 8:30 AM Eastern time. As of 7:15 Eastern, the "Internet Explorer cannot open the internet site" bug still exists.

The "Internet Explorer cannot open the internet site" has affected webpages ranging from the popular Perez Hilton site to various news sites such as the Weekly Standard and Hotair.

There are a number of things that an Internet user can do to deal with the "Internet Explorer cannot open the internet site" bug.

First, if one has a webpage that uses sitemeter, one can remove the sitemeter code from ones webpage until the situation is resolved.

If one is using Internet Explorer 6.0 or Internet Explorer 7.0 there are two things one can do to deal with the "Internet Explorer cannot open the internet site" bug. First, one could switch to Firefox or some other non Microsoft web browser. These seem not to be affected by the sitemeter bug.

The second thing one can do is to wait until the sitemeter "Internet Explorer cannot open the internet site" bug is resolved. In order to test, try to load the sitemeter page. If the "Internet Explorer cannot open the internet site" bug still occurs, then it hasn't been fixed yet. If the page loads successfully, then very likely the situation has been resolved.
