Sites that Pay Upfront for Articles

Janet Hunt
I decided to write about a phrase that I myself have searched many times. As freelance writers, we are always looking for more resources. Residual pay in nice but it often takes quite awhile to build up a body of work where you will see a significant amount of monthly income from this. If you are writing to pay bills, upfront pay sites can be a great way to earn some extra cash. I will share with you some of the sites I have found on my searches. Some of the sites I have experience with and some I only know of by word of mouth. If you know of more, please feel free to share them in the comments.

Demand Studios

I have been writing for Demand Studios for a little over a year now. Demand Studios pays anywhere from $3 to $20 for articles. Sometimes, they offer special assignments that pay more. You may have to apply for these special assignments. They have several formats to choose from. Some of their formats include about, how-to, strategy, list, decision, how does, product review, shopping guide, short answer, trip and travel review. Copy editors review the articles before publishing. If they find your article needs editing, they will send it back to you for a rewrite. You have one chance to successfully complete a rewrite or your article can be rejected. You have to have a thick skin and deal with the rewrites. I find that rather than arguing or being offended, it is best to just do what the editor asks and go on to the next article. Demand Studios pays twice weekly into your paypal account. You have to complete an application and be approved to write at Demand Studios.

Associated Content

Most of my readers write for Associated Content and are familiar with their upfront pay system. For the sake of those who don't I will share what information I know. Associated Content offers both upfront pay and residual earnings. There is a clout system beginning at clout 1 up to clout 10. You can earn from $1.50 to $2.00 per thousand page views depending upon your clout level. The clout level is based upon a formula of page views and number of articles published. Articles can be submitted for upfront pay and will then be reviewed by an editor. The normal upfront pay amount is $3 to $20 per article. Associated content also offers a featured contributor program where qualified applicants may write about their given specialty. Featured contributors are given three paid articles to write a month. The normal pay rate for featured contributors if $10 per article for your special contributor assignments. As a featured contributor, you are required to write one article per month in your featured category besides the three paid assignments. You may be a featured contributor in more than one category if you are approved. Featured contributors must complete a special application for the program. Associated Content pays monthly on the second Wednesday of every month for residuals payments and upfront pay articles are paid upon approval into your paypal account.

Break Studios

Break Studios is a fairly new site that pays upfront for articles. I recently began writing there but do not yet have much experience with them. The pay is $8 per article. Break Studios may be for you if you are looking to write some content "outside of the box." Many of their titles are top ten lists. You will be writing for men's magazines but women are welcomed as writers there as well. They encourage their writers to lend a humorous slant to articles. Article length should be 200 to 700 words in length. They pay through paypal once a month. Writers must complete an application and be approved to write for Break Studios.

You just gave me a ton of ideas. Which just adds on to the many I already have in mind. I'm always looking for a place to call "home" in the Writer's world. Your article adds good options to an growing list of mine. Thanks for that.

Thanks Janet, this was very informative ... I've tried writing for Demand Studios, but I guess my "skin is not thick enough" i sure do know what you mean by that ... I'm going to try some of the other sites you suggested ... also ... such an epiphany in your very first sentence ... write about something you yourself would search on ...

    Thanks again,
    S :)
