Sitting in a Starbucks

April 28th, 2010

So punny seems to be the word of the week, for I haven't heard all that much that is funny this last week but I've heard lots of puns. It's been a grand-ay so far. Yes. read that again.

I was told yesterday that it had been a grand-ay. I just blinked, I couldn't quite decide how I should react to this. Then one of the barristas, a good friend, playfully began to blame the mess at the bar on me. "Thanks A Latte Chris!" She yelled out into the mostly empty room with an over-dramatic sigh.

Now I have nothing against puns, my girl-friend is a hard-core pun fan, while I myself hold a certain fondness for the odd fuzzy creatures of language. This was however a bit...umm...too punny for my taste. They were making Starbucks puns.

I'm not sure if there is anything in the world lower than a Starbucks pun. There is just something profoundly, twisted about it? Maybe it's the fact that they simply create their drink names out of thin air so they have no right to amuse? I'm not sure. Whatever it is their is just something quite profoundly disturbing about the puniness of Starbucks lately.
Something only matched by the oddness found this morning when I walked into a mostly empty Starbucks. I should really stop doing that, whenever it's juts the barristas and I things tend to get a bit...cooky. They have odd conversations. Take this morning for example.

The store manager and shift manager were talking to the barrista at the cash register. He is...a very gentle guy all around. You need to understand that to understand how...amusing the conversation was. He's the kind of guy that squealed in fear at falling object.

They were trying to educate him on how to fight. I believe the topic was hair pulling as I walked in. I stepped in the door. Silence ensued moments afterwards. Awkward moments abounded. Then again...when you're sitting in a Starbucks. They always do.

Until next time.
