Six, Asleep

April Fox
when the sky lays down
the blanket of starlight
and moonmother watches
your breath rise and fall

when your eyes flutter closed
sung to dream by the music
your headphones make tiny and flat

when your arms reach out
grasping
for bunnies and sheep

when i lift off your glasses
pull your hat down tight
on your head

smooth back your hair
hold your hand
bless the dirt on the skin
of your fingers
knowing it means
you were happy
today

close your book
lay aside
the crayons and paper

tuck in the blankets
switch off the lights
lay my hand on your cheek
six times over
convincing myself
that you're real

when the day ends and i am
secure in these walls
doors locked and dogs keeping guard
on both sides

you are always
and i will
be here.
