Six College Diet Pitfalls and How to Avoid Them

Steven Moneyworth
Dieting in college can be difficult for numerous reasons. However, many college students would like to lose weight. By identifying the common diet issues faced by students, university-goers trying to lose weight will be more likely to be successful. In this article, I describe the 6 biggest diet pitfalls college students face and how they can be avoided.

College Diet Pitfall #1 - Dining Halls
Probably the biggest diet pitfall for college students are large, all-you-can-eat dining halls containing plentiful, unhealthy diet options. For many college freshmen, dining halls such as these may be one of the few meal choices available. This is unfortunate. Even though there may be some healthy options at such dining halls, they may be few and far between, or they may take a long time to get or simply be unappealing. Likewise, the unhealthy food present is likely seen in greater quantity and may be more quickly obtained. But the biggest diet pitfall seen at these dining halls is overeating. If you are trying to diet in college, do what you can to either stay out of the dining halls or to regulate your food intake while there.

College Diet Pitfall #2 - Stress
College is stressful. A common reaction to stress is to overeat. Homesickness may produce a similar effect. When attempting a diet in college, also try to reduce your stress load and make sure that you are mentally prepared to make dietary changes.

College Diet Pitfall #3 - Social Eating
Eating is a very social activity in college. Even if a college student isn't hungry, he or she may be coerced into eating, simply because it is a way to hang out with friends. If you are trying to diet in college, resist the temptation to eat if you aren't hungry, even if you go along with others to a restaurant or dining hall.

College Diet Pitfall #4 - Parties
Many drinks and typical party foods are packed with empty calories. Likewise, your resolve to diet might be compromised after several drinks. If you choose to go to college parties while on a diet, try to limit your drink intake. You'll be more likely to stick to your commitment.

College Diet Pitfall #5 - Irregular Meal Schedules
Eating irregularly can be a serious diet pitfall in college. For example, if a college student eats breakfast at 11, then doesn't eat dinner until 8, he or she will be much more likely to overeat later. Small, regular meals or snacks are much more likely to be compatible with a diet plan.

College Diet Pitfall #6 - Snacks
Some snacks are healthy, and some snacks are not. For example, a snack of carrot and celery sticks is fairly healthy and low-calorie, whereas a bag of chips is less healthy and higher in caloric value. If you intend to eat snacks, make sure that they don't go against your end goal.

While college students face some unique diet problems, none are insurmountable. In fact, if a college student can maintain a diet while at school, he or she will probably be able to lose weight in any scenario. If you are embarking on your own diet, good luck and thank you for reading this article!
