Six Diet Saving Strategies for Grocery Shopping

Wendy Cheuvront
Have you ever gone into the grocery store, while on a diet and just totally blew it? Have you given into cravings and bought things that you shouldn't be eating? Here are some diet saving tips to help you get through your visit to the grocery store while buying only what you need and should be eating.

1. Never grocery shop while hungry. Always make sure you have eaten first. If you go into the store hungry, you are much more likely to pick up things that you don't need to buy, and also more likely to buy much more than you need. You will see food and think about what you could be eating, which will make you buy many things you haven't planned for.

2. ALWAYS make a list. It's good to make a meal plan too. That way, you will know what you need and what to put on your list.
If you carefully plan your meals, you should know all that you need for your meals and snacks.
If you go into the store with a list, you are far less likely to buy things that you don't need, and won't do as much impulse buying.

3. Stay out of the snack food isles. If you go into those isles with the snack chips and such, you are more likely to give into any cravings, so it's best to avoid these isles when possible. If you have children or others in your household that "need" these items, bring them with you, and let them go into the isle and get what they want while you wait at the end.

5. List your items in order. If you know the store you shop at well, it should be very easy for you to list your items by the order you come to them. This will eliminate the need to backtrack if you happen to "miss" something your first time through.

For example.... If produce is the first isle you hit, list all your fruits and vegtables at the top of your list. Next list the items that you may find in the next isle you will shop in, and so on.

If you don't know your store well, it may be worth it to jot down the isles in order the next time you visit, so that in the future you may make an ordered list.

6. Get in and out quickly. If you do your shopping as quickly as possible, you will get in and out and avoid overbuying or buying things that are not on your list. This can not only save you calories, but quite a bit of money as well.
