Six Foods that Cause Gout

David Suiter
There are many people who deal with gout everyday of their lives. The good news is it can be treated and you can definitely get it under control. There are certain foods you should tend avoid if you want to keep from having a painful attack of gout. What is interesting about the foods that can cause gout can differ greatly from one individual to the next. For example, foods that are high in purine and protein could bring on an attack for one person but not another.

Here are 6 types of foods that can cause gout. They could be causing yours.

1. Alcohol

Alcohol increases the production of uric acid and inhibits its excretion by the kidneys. Drinking in moderation may help, but unfortunately you may be faced with giving up alcohol if your gout is bad enough and comes back when you drink it.

2. Simple sugars, carbohydrates and saturated fats -

Simple sugars, carbohydrates and saturated fats increase your body's production of uric acid and impair your kidneys' ability to get rid of it. Eliminate fructose (found in food and soda pop.

3. Shellfish

Shellfish to avoid include scallops, cod roe, crab, lobster, and shrimp. It tastes great, but is bad for people with gout.

4. Meat

Red meat, bacon, meat gravies and broths, offal, sweetbreads, veal, and meat extracts. If you get the symptoms of gout when you eat meat you know to avoid that specific thin.

5. Yeast products

Baked goods and beer fall into this category. If you like to drink beer and have gout (you have my deepest sympathies) you will either have to cut back, get on a preventive medicine, or stop drinking it. Of course you can just live with the pain which is very rarely an option for people who get bad gout.

6. Purine rich foods

Anchovies, sardines in oil, fish roes, herring. Organ meat including liver, kidneys, and sweetbreads. Legumes such as dried beans, peas. And mushrooms, spinach, asparagus, cauliflower.

This is 6 possible categories of foods that can cause gout. The good news is gout is treatable. You will want to research to find out about any other types of gout food to avoid. You may get gout from completely different foods than these 6. The more informed you become the easier it will be to avoid the foods that will cause you the most pain.

Once you have determined specific foods that give you gout you can avoid those or eat them in moderation. Many people report good results by spacing out how often they eat their favorites. Giving your body time to recover can allow you to occasionally eat what you want.
