Many dogs seem to be natural and excellent beggars. All it takes is two droopy cheeks a limp tail, and a pair of attentive but sad eyes to entice the owner into throwing down some table scraps. While it can be fun and enjoyable to watch your pooch nibble away at a bit of human food, it can be dangerous. Certain foods that are harmless to humans can have harmful and or deadly effects on dogs. If you have a dog that enjoys table scraps here and there you might want to be on the alert for certain foods that can jeopardize your dog's health. Some of these foods are listed below.
1. Fruits like grapes and raisins can cause grave detriment to your dog's health. If eaten, grapes and raisins can cause kidney failure in your poor little pooch. So although your dog may give you the beggar's eye while you are enjoying that scrumptious oatmeal raisin cookie or that handful of grapes you should avoid giving in. Keep these fruits away from your dog.
2. Chocolate should be avoided at all costs. Chocolate can prove to be very deadly to not only dogs but to cats as well. Dogs actually enjoy chocolate but it should not be given to them. If consumed, chocolate can cause hyperactivity, depression, muscle tremors, vomiting and diarrhea.
3. You should keep your dog away from avocados as they can cause damage to the liver and heart and have the potential to cause vomiting and pancreatitis. Some dog owners admit to giving their dogs avocados without it causing any problems. This is true for some dogs. Some dogs can tolerate avocado as long as they stay away from the pit which can become lodged in the digestive tract causing a whole host of problems. If your dog has never eaten avocado before then it is best to keep them away from it just to be on the safe side. Pits from peaches and plums can also prove dangerous to your dog as it can cause major problems with the digestive tract.
4. Tomato can cause a series of problems in dogs such as; drooling, paralysis, constipation, diarrhea, tremors, coma, constipation or death. Some owners do feed their dogs tomatoes without problem. These tomatoes are usually ripe. Tomatoes that are ripe seem to be less problematic to dogs because as the tomato ripens the harmful chemical (known as tomatine) is metabolized making it less likely to cause harm to the dog.
5.Dogs should avoid beer. Just because he's man's best friend does not mean he can get a pass on one of man's favorite beverages; beer. Beer and any alcoholic beverages can cause intoxication and death and in some cases can cause a dog to become comatose.
6.Table Scraps should not be given to your dog on a frequent basis. Table scraps have little nutritional value and therefore should not be given in excess to your dog. Bones should never be given to dogs and the fatty portion on any meat should be cut.
